ADD A PLACEA working-docks walk rather than a pretty one, and the better for it: Hull City Council's signposted circuit leaves St John's Church on Rosmead Street, crosses the park with its playground and exercise zone, and takes the old Withernsea branch line cycleway to the blue bridge over the railway into the dock estate. From there it follows the Holderness Drain down to Hedon Road, past the Alexandra Dock gatehouse and the restored hundred-ton steam crane that Associated British Ports keeps on the quay, with a short optional spur out to the Humber bank or into Hedon Road Cemetery, before returning past Hull Prison and up Southcoates Lane. It is Hull City Council land and highway, and Hull has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order of any kind, so the only instruction on the council's route page is to pick up after your dog. Hedon Road is a dual carriageway with heavy port traffic and the drain bank is unfenced.
A signposted Hull City Council route that follows the Setting Dyke drain west from National Avenue, then climbs a footbridge over the Hull to Cottingham and Scarborough branch line to reach Priory Drive and the tree-lined track and cycleway that runs behind the Shropshire Close and Warwickshire Close estates. It ducks under the County Road North flyover and comes back down the drain, so the whole thing is a green corridor squeezed between the railway and the western suburbs. Kingswood was built on drained carrland in the 1990s and 2000s, and the Engine Drain that made the building possible now runs through it as a tree-lined trail, which is the one properly green thing in a district otherwise made of retail sheds and new housing. Hull City Council's signposted circuit starts at the Kingswood Retail Park bus interchange by Asda, picks the drain up at the zebra crossing and follows it past the playground and Kingswood Parks Primary School to the Village Green shops, returning by Runnymede Avenue, Richmond Way, Barnes Way, Ashcombe Road and Althorp Road. It is all Hull City Council land and highway, and Hull has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all, so the council's own guidance for the route asks only that you pick up after your dog. It is flat and hard-surfaced almost throughout, which makes it a good winter option, but there are several busy estate-road crossings.
Foredyke Stream is one of the old drains that once carried water off east Hull into the River Hull, and the segregated path along it from Chamberlain Road is a quiet green line through streets that have very little other green in them. The route runs north past the allotments and a wooded stretch, crosses the ancient meadow at Rockford Fields, joins the Hornsea Rail Trail and Trans Pennine Trail south, then comes back through Dunscombe Park. Rockford Fields has been grazed or mown since monastic days and carries a genuinely rich mix of grasses and wildflowers, including the uncommon crow garlic. This is Hull City Council land, and Hull has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so the only instruction on the council's own route page is to pick up after your dog.
A flat two miles of quayside, cobbles and river that takes in most of what Hull is known for: the yacht basin in the old Humber and Railway Docks, the fruit-market warehouses on Humber Street, Victoria Pier where the New Holland ferry used to leave, the tidal surge barrier and the Scale Lane swing bridge over the River Hull. It is all Hull City Council highway and public realm, and the city has no dog control order of any kind, so this is one of the few English city centres where nothing on a walk like this is closed to a dog. The route runs the marina pontoons, follows the Humber promenade east past The Deep, turns up the River Hull to Scale Lane, then comes back through the Old Town on High Street, Queen's Gardens and Princes Quay. Rockford Fields is a genuine wild hay meadow left over from the monastic farming of the Sutton carrs, and it survives inside east Hull because the old Hull to Hornsea railway walled it off on one side and the Foredyke Stream on the other. Hull City Council's signposted circuit starts at the Sutton Road underpass on the rail trail, drops onto the meadow, follows the Foredyke Stream track past the allotments and a strip of young woodland, and comes back over Sutton Trod, the raised path that carried villagers into town before the roads were made up. It is Hull City Council land, and Hull, a unitary authority quite separate from East Riding, has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order; the council's own route notes ask only that you pick up after your dog. The meadow is left uncut until late summer for the wildflowers, so the grass is chest-high on a spaniel from June.
Setting Dyke is a drain cut as part of a 1172 scheme to take the water off the Newlands carrs, and Hull City Council has turned its grassed bank into one of the city's signposted walking routes. The walk heads west from National Avenue along the north side of the drain, crosses County Road North, passes Bricknell Playing Fields and slips into the strip of woodland by the Hull to Scarborough railway before coming back through Dent Road, Bishop Alcock Road and Bricknell Avenue. This is Hull City Council land and highway throughout, and Hull is a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so the council's own route guidance asks only that you pick up after your dog. County Road North is a genuinely busy crossing and the drain bank is boggy and rutted in winter.
The Trod is the old raised footpath that carried people between Sutton village and Hull across the carrs, and Hull City Council's signposted route uses it to link St James's Church on Church Street to the wildflower meadow at Rockford Fields. It leaves the village past The Ship Inn, works through Hornbeams Close and Tweendykes Road, crosses the very busy Sutton Road and drops through Glenwood Close onto the meadow, then comes home along the Hornsea Rail Trail and Trans Pennine Trail past the Barbara Robson Playing Field. This is Hull City Council, a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order of any kind, and the council's route notes ask only that you pick up after your dog. Sutton Road is fast and there is a signalled crossing about 340 yards away if the direct crossing looks unwise.
Victoria Dock Village was built in the 1990s on the filled-in timber dock east of the River Hull, and the best thing about it is the shoreline walkway that runs the whole way along its Humber frontage and on west to Sammy's Point and The Deep. There is a real beach of sand, shingle and brick rubble below the wall at the eastern end, reachable by steps, and it is one of very few places in the city where a dog can get into open water. This is Hull City Council, a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so nothing here is closed to dogs at any time of year. The Humber has one of the largest tidal ranges in Britain and a savage ebb current, and the shoreline below the wall covers completely on a big spring tide.
Hull City Council calls Bude Park one of the largest parks in the city, and it is the open ground that separates the older Bransholme estates from the newer Kingswood development, entered from Bude Road or from Ennerdale. It is mostly wide mown grass and sports pitches rather than Victorian planting, which makes it an unusually good place to throw a ball, and there is a multi-use games area, an outdoor gym and a seasonal water play area at the Ennerdale end. Hull is a unitary authority separate from East Riding and has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so the only published dog rule here is the one covering the enclosed play areas. The park is open on all sides to Bude Road and Ennerdale, both of which carry fast traffic.
Costello Playing Fields on Anlaby Park Road North is where the Hull parkrun is held on a Saturday morning, and a short link along Pickering Road joins it to the smaller Peter Pan Park with its nature pond and island. Between them they give a couple of miles of flat mown grass and made-up path on the western edge of the city, with four floodlit tennis courts and a stand of mature limes along the Anlaby Park Road boundary. This is Hull City Council land, and the city has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order of any kind; the council's only published dog rule for the site is the play area exclusion. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the parkrun and the junior races make this a lead-only walk in practice, and the pitches are chewed up and boggy from November.
At 130 acres this is Hull's largest park and the city's default dog walk, an 1887 Victorian layout off Holderness Road with the Ferens boating lake at its heart, a model yacht pond, the Khyber Pass rock folly and its waterfall, and long tarmac carriage drives that stay walkable in winter. This is Hull City Council land, a unitary authority entirely separate from East Riding, and Hull's rules are its own. The whole park is open to dogs except the enclosed children's play area and splash pad, where the council's page says only assistance dogs are allowed; the free Animal Education Centre with its farm and exotic stock is a further reason to have a lead to hand. The park is unfenced from the surrounding streets, gates open at 8am and it closes at dusk on a sliding seasonal timetable.
This is the one Hull City Council walking route that comes with a lead instruction, and it is worth knowing why: it runs through the Eastern Cemetery, still an active burial ground, entered by the stone gates off Preston Road and circled on its own service roads past the red-brick chapel. Beyond the cemetery it takes Poorhouse Lane past Craven Park, joins the tree-lined track on the old Hull to Withernsea railway, crosses Greatfield Lane and Marfleet Lane by the site of Marfleet station, then goes out across Marfleet fields and over a footbridge on the Marfleet drain. Hull is a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so the lead here is a courtesy rule attached to a working cemetery rather than a byelaw. Underfoot it is the roughest of the council's east Hull routes, with boggy ground on the field section and steep little inclines.
The Hull end of the old Hull and Hornsea railway, closed in 1964 and now a hard-surfaced permissive bridleway that runs dead straight for ten miles to the sea. This section leaves the industrial edge of Sutton Fields off Leads Road, crosses the Bransholme estates on a green corridor of hawthorn, bramble and ash, and slips over the boundary into East Riding of Yorkshire just south of Swine. That boundary matters: the first half is Hull City Council, which has no dog control order at all, and the second half is East Riding, whose own page for the trail asks for close control rather than a lead. It is shared with cyclists and horse riders throughout and they come through fast and quiet, so a recall that works is worth more here than anywhere else in the city.
A local nature reserve on the northern edge of Bransholme, all rough meadow, hawthorn scrub, drain-side willow and a large fishing lake, and one of only two designated local nature reserves inside the Hull city boundary. The reserve is Hull City Council land, not East Riding, and the council closes only the play areas to dogs; the reserve paths themselves carry no lead rule. This circuit picks the reserve up from Bransholme Road, works round the lake and the meadows, and comes back past the sports pitches off Noddle Hill Way. Ground-nesting birds use the rough grass from March to July, and the drains that edge the reserve are steep-sided and deep.
Seventy-five acres of open grass, fishing lake and rough grassland squeezed between Beresford Avenue and the western bank of the River Hull, and the largest single space in north Hull where a dog can properly stretch out. This is Hull City Council land, so the East Riding dog control orders do not apply here; the council allows dogs everywhere on the site except the fenced play areas. The route runs north up the flood-bank path beside the tidal river, past the fishing lake and the skate park, then loops back across the pitches on the Oak Road side. The river is tidal, deep and steep-sided with no easy way out, and the marked sports pitches are in use most weekends from September.
Hull's first public park, laid out in the 1860s by Zachariah Pearson, still keeps its original perimeter carriage drive, serpentine lake, bandstand, Victorian conservatory and marble statues of Victoria and Albert, and this route links it to the four tree-lined Victorian avenues west of Princes Avenue. Pearson Park is Hull City Council land, a unitary authority quite separate from East Riding, and the council's own park page allows dogs everywhere except the enclosed play area. The circuit leaves the Beverley Road gates, rounds the lake, drops onto Princes Avenue and runs the full length of Park Avenue past its cast-iron drinking fountains to Chanterlands Avenue, returning along Westbourne Avenue. Well over half of it is pavement rather than park, so it is a lead walk with a green middle rather than a run-free space.
Given to the city by Christopher Pickering in 1911 and laid out three miles west of the centre off Pickering Road, this is the big green space for the Gipsyville and Hessle Road end of Hull, with a fishing lake, a bandstand ringed with picnic benches, a bike track, an outdoor gym and a calisthenics zone. It is Hull City Council land, and Hull is a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all, so the only dog rule published for the park is the one covering the enclosed play area. The circuit follows the made-up carriage paths round the lake and the playing fields and back past the aviary, which since a half-million-pound refurbishment holds birds, small mammals and a group of meerkats. Keep a lead handy for the aviary end and for the paddling pool, and note that the playing fields are marked out for football and rounders and are in use most weekends.
Opened in 1885 between Walton Street and Anlaby Road, West Park is the green setting for the MKM Stadium and for Hull Fair, which takes over the Walton Street side for a week every October. Away from the stadium it is a straightforward Victorian park of mature limes, wide lawns, a bowling green, an aviary and a lake, with a made-up path circuit that stays walkable through the winter. It is Hull City Council land, and the council closes only the play area to dogs; the city has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all. ADD A PLACEOne of the city's easternmost parks, on the Bilton Grange estate and reached from Amethyst Road or Valiant Drive, with bowling greens, baseball diamonds, a trim trail, a wildlife area, a community garden and a set of low hills that the Sunday junior parkrun uses for its two-kilometre course. What makes it worth the drive with a dog is the dog agility area, which is about the only piece of purpose-built dog provision Hull City Council publishes anywhere in the city. Hull is a unitary authority entirely separate from East Riding and operates no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all, and unlike the council's pages for its other parks this one publishes no dog exclusion of any kind. The park is open around the clock and free; the toilets only open when the water play area is running.
