Parking

Informal roadside parking on Figham Road and Long Lane only, room for perhaps eight cars and no facilities. Most people walk out from Beckside or from the Flemingate pay-and-display.

Figham is the quiet one of Beverley's three commons, three hundred acres of unfenced grazing marsh wedged between the Beck, the River Hull and Long Lane, and on a weekday you can have it to yourself. It is held by the same Pasture Masters as the Westwood and run under the same 2004 byelaws, so the rule is proper control rather than a compulsory lead, but freemen's cattle are on the grass from April to December and the drainage dykes are deep, steep-sided and full of water. The circuit runs out to the river bank, south along the flood embankment with the Wolds behind you and the Hull running below, then back across the open pasture. There are no gates and no waymarks once you are through the entrance off Figham Road, and after heavy rain the low ground by the dykes turns to sucking clay.

THE SMALL PRINTBeverley Pasture Masters Byelaws 2004, byelaw 14: dogs must be kept under proper control by their handlers on the Common Pastures and must not be allowed to worry, chase or disturb any grazing animal. That is control, not a lead. Cattle graze Figham April to December, and the council's own countryside guidance says lead up around farm animals. No Public Spaces Protection Order applies to Figham.
