Dog-friendly Teesside & Cleveland

A brewery taproom on Ryans Row in the Longbeck industrial estate at the south end of Marske, about a mile inland from the sands and a few minutes from Longbeck station. The brewery lists itself as dog friendly on its own site, and the taproom is a single room of brewing kit and benches rather than a divided pub, so there is no dog area to be sent to. Open Thursday from 5pm, Friday from 3pm, Saturday from 1pm to 11pm and Sunday 1pm to 8pm, closed Monday to Wednesday. Beer only, no kitchen, and free parking on the estate outside.

A High Street pub in the middle of Redcar, a few minutes' walk up from the Esplanade and the sand. Its own website states plainly that it welcomes well-behaved dogs into the whole pub, not a corner of it, and that it aims to keep them as comfortable as their owners; that covers the bar and the beer garden. Open from 11am Monday to Thursday, noon at weekends, with a 1am licence on Friday and Saturday. Useful as the wet-dog stop after Redcar beach because you do not have to negotiate which room you are allowed in.

A large family pub on Pheasant Fields Lane on the north side of Skelton, with cask ales, a full food menu and a beer garden. Its own site lists dog friendly among the pub's facilities, though it does not say which rooms are covered, so it is worth asking whether the dog can come past the bar. Useful as the nearest pub with parking to the Skelton end of the Cleveland Way.

An estate pub on The Avenue at Hutton Meadows, on the south side of Guisborough and within walking distance of the lanes running up towards Hutton Village and the forest. The pub publishes its own dog page and welcomes dogs in the bar area, with water bowls and treats kept behind the bar. There is no published policy for the restaurant side, so ask at the door if you want to eat with the dog rather than drink.

A village pub on Skelton High Street with a public bar, a lounge with pool table and dart boards, a dining room and six bed and breakfast rooms above. Its own site is unusually clear about dogs: well behaved dogs are welcome not only in the bar and lounge areas but in the bedrooms too, at £5 per dog per night. That combination is rare in this corner of Cleveland, and the pub sits within a mile of the Cleveland Way as it climbs out of Skelton Green.

A traditional inn on Marske High Street, five minutes up from the seafront and the slipway onto the sands. Its own site states plainly that dogs are welcome and that the pub provides the water bowls, and it serves home-cooked food in the bar or the restaurant six days a week. Opening is from 3pm Monday to Thursday and from noon Friday to Sunday. It also has letting rooms, but the site does not say whether dogs are taken in them, so that needs asking before you book a bed.

A seafood restaurant in the Foreshore Building on the Lower Promenade, directly above the sand and looking along the pier to Hunt Cliff, with a fish and chip shop on the ground floor. Its own site states the terrace is open and that it is happy to accommodate dogs when the weather is dry, which is the whole of the published policy: the terrace only, and only in dry weather, with nothing said about the dining room inside. Open every day from 11.30am with last tables at 8.30pm, and you need to book if you are eating in rather than taking away. Cat Nab car park is a hundred yards away.

Middlesbrough's Victorian town park, thirty hectares between Linthorpe Road and Park Vale Road, opened in 1868 and still the busiest dog-walking ground in the town. This circuit follows the perimeter path from the Linthorpe Road gates by the Dorman Museum, along the inside of Park Road North, round past the boating lake at the Park Vale Road end and back. Everything is tarmac and lit, the gates open at 7.30am and lock at 10pm, and there is a cafe in the visitor centre. The one thing to know before you set off is that the park lies inside the TS1 Public Spaces Protection Order area, so this is a lead walk rather than a free run.

Forestry England's yellow-waymarked loop from the Guisborough Forest and Walkway visitor centre at Pinchinthorpe, 2.75 miles and about an hour and a half. It opens with a steep pull up through the beech wood behind the car park, then settles onto forest road and track through mixed plantation with Guisborough and the whole of Teesside laid out below. There is no seasonal closure and no blanket lead rule: the Forestry England dog code asks only that dogs are kept close and in sight, and put on a lead if recall is unreliable. The beck gives a drink on the lower section, and the car park is Redcar and Cleveland pay and display, £1.50 up to an hour to £6.00 all day.

The short option from Pinchinthorpe visitor centre, 1.9 miles on orange markers and about three quarters of an hour. It climbs through beech woodland onto the higher forest roads, takes the view out over Guisborough and Teesside, then drops back to the car park. Almost all of it is firm forest road, which makes it the trail to pick after rain or with an older dog, and there is no seasonal closure. The cafe and toilets at the visitor centre stay open until 3pm at weekends and bank holidays when the centre itself is shut.

Coatham Marsh is a Tees Valley Wildlife Trust reserve of lakes, reedbed and old ballast mounds squeezed between Redcar's western edge and the Warrenby steelworks land, and the circuit round the two main waters is a flat two miles. The Trust's instruction on the reserve is blunt and printed on its own page: keep dogs on a lead, clear up after your animals, do not disturb the wildlife. Start from the free Tod Point Road car park halfway along the Warrenby side; paths are surfaced on the south of the reserve and unsurfaced on the north, and several flood after heavy rain. It is a birdwatchers' reserve rather than a running-about one, so this is the walk for a wet January morning when the beach is blowing sand, not for a dog that needs to burn off an hour.

Loftus's main open space, between Coronation Road and Westfield Terrace, with a bowling green, a pavilion, a rebuilt play area and a network of footpaths through grass and new planting. It is one of the seven formal parks named in the borough dog Public Spaces Protection Order, which means dogs must be on a lead here at all times: a fixed lead no longer than two metres, or an extendable one not extended beyond four metres, with a £100 fixed penalty and up to £1,000 in court. Dogs are also barred from the fenced children's play area and from the multi-use games area beside the skate park, both of which are covered by separate provisions of the same order. The order runs to 30 June 2028. It is a twenty-minute lead walk rather than a destination, but it is level, lit and the only enclosed green in the middle of the town.

Forty-two acres of steep wooded banks, becks and wetland in a cleft below Coulby Newham, the old grounds of Gunnergate Hall and now a Green Flag site. The perimeter walk from Gunnergate Lane runs round the lake, past the bird hide and the carved wooden statues, and climbs the wooded sides on paths the council itself warns are uneven. It is the muddiest ground in Middlesbrough after rain and the closest thing the town has to a proper wood. Middlesbrough's only Public Spaces Protection Order covers the TS1 town centre, so there is no lead requirement here and no seasonal ban.

A self-catering farm cottage at Pinchinthorpe between Great Ayton and Guisborough, on the edge of the National Park boundary. The owners state that families and their well behaved pets are very welcome, without naming a charge or a limit. It sits within a few minutes' walk of the Guisborough Forest and Walkway visitor centre, which puts three waymarked forest loops and the old railway walkway on the doorstep.

A country house hotel on Whitby Lane on the south-east edge of Guisborough, with rooms in the Old Hall and the Woodland Wing and three shepherd huts in the grounds. Its own terms and conditions set the dog policy out flatly: dogs are welcome in certain bedrooms at £15 per night, but not in the shepherd huts, not in the public areas of the hotel and not in the dining areas. Worth knowing before you book, because it means the dog stays in the room while you eat, and the forest trails at Pinchinthorpe are a ten-minute drive west.

A country house hotel in its own grounds on Grinkle Lane at Easington, about three miles inland from Loftus and the best-documented dog stay in East Cleveland. Its own FAQ states that two classic double and two deluxe double rooms are dog friendly, that dogs are charged at £10.00 per night, and that dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel apart from the main restaurant, with a table set in the conservatory if you want to eat with the dog beside you. Only four of the rooms take dogs, so the booking has to be made against one of them rather than any room. The grounds and the surrounding estate lanes give an easy hour on the lead before you go anywhere near the coast.

Self-catering lodges in the grounds of Rushpool Hall on Saltburn Lane, set back in the woods above Skelton Beck about a mile from Saltburn seafront. The operator's own site describes them as dog-friendly self-catering holiday homes, which is the whole of the published policy: no limit on numbers, no charge and no house rules are stated anywhere on the site. The Valley Gardens path runs down through the woods from here to Cat Nab and the beach, so you can walk to the sand without driving. Rushpool Hall itself, the hotel in the same grounds, publishes no dog policy at all and is a separate booking.

Four self-catering conversions and two shepherd's huts at Barns Farm on the edge of Brotton, a couple of miles inland from Saltburn and Cattersty Sands. The operator's own dog page states that multiple well-behaved dogs are taken without extra charge, that every property has a fully enclosed private patio or garden, and that dog towels, bowls, treats and dog tags are provided for the stay. That combination, no charge and no limit on numbers, is unusual anywhere on this coast and makes it the obvious base for two or more dogs. The properties are Farm Retreat, Paddock View, Stable Yard and Barn Side, plus the Deer and Hare shepherd's huts.

A family-run hotel of thirty-six en-suite rooms on Redcar High Street looking out over the seafront, eleven of them on the ground floor. Its own site states it is a pet friendly hotel and that guests are welcome to relax with their dogs in the lounge in the evening and at breakfast in the morning, with a charge of £10 per stay rather than per night. Dog-friendly accommodation is named on specific room types rather than offered across the whole hotel, so ask for one when you book. Check-in is 1pm booking direct or 3pm through an agency, check-out 10.30am, breakfast 7am to 9am, and the Esplanade and the sand are two minutes away.

A restored eighteenth-century walled garden on Plantation Road at Kirkleatham, two miles inland from Redcar seafront, with growing beds, glasshouses and a cafe inside the walls. The garden's own visitor page states it is dog friendly and that four-legged friends are welcome in the cafe as well as the garden, which is unusual for a paid-entry garden. Open Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm with last garden entry at three; adult admission is £4.00, children £3.00, under-threes free. Parking on site is free, and it is a sheltered option on a day when the coast is unwalkable.
