A one-room micropub on two levels tucked up Swaby’s Yard off Dyer Lane, opened in 2013 by a CAMRA member and still independent. Five handpulls cover bitter, pale, IPA and something dark, with eight keg lines and up to six ciders, and there is a small outdoor drinking area for warm evenings. It is a talking pub with no machines and no television, so a settled dog fits in and a bouncy one will be noticed. A street-corner pub at 2 Norwood, on the A1035 at the north end of Beverley near the bus station and a short walk from Beverley railway station. It is the handiest dog-friendly pub in town if you have arrived by train and are heading for the Westwood. A Victorian street-corner local on Norwood, the A1035 through the top of town, a couple of minutes from the bus station and about six hundred metres from Beverley railway station. It closed and then reopened in November 2019, and the two-room layout was put back with advice from the local CAMRA pub preservation officer, so it reads as a proper old boozer rather than a refit. There is off-street parking directly opposite, which is unusual this close to the middle of Beverley. A plain local at 3 Beckside North, on the water at the head of Beverley Beck beside the Barge Preservation Society moorings, and the first or last building on the Beck towpath depending which way you walk it. Nothing about it is smart, which is rather the point after five miles of flood bank. A Grade II listed building of about 1751 standing on Saturday Market, licensed since it was built and now a Craft Union house with four cask ales, two regular and two changing. It is a locals' pub, open from ten in the morning and late on Fridays and Saturdays, with lunchtime and evening food and sport on the screens, and it fills up on racedays when the Westwood is busy. Straight across the square from the Saturday Market car park, so it is the easy first stop coming off Black Mill. A large suburban pub at 75 Molescroft Road on the north-west edge of Beverley, five minutes on foot from the free Hudson Way car park off Woodhall Way. That makes it the trailhead pub for the rail trail and for anyone coming off the top end of the Westwood. The oldest pub in Beverley, on Highgate right under the north side of the Minster, with a second way in from Eastgate through the back yard. A small front bar with cast iron Reynolds tables opens into a long main room that runs back past a little restaurant area, and behind that is a walled garden with the Minster towers over the wall plus a rear courtyard. It is the natural stop at the end of a Beck or Minster walk and the yard entrance means you are not dragging a wet dog through the front bar. A modern bistro bar in a listed Georgian building on Flemingate, a couple of minutes from the Minster and five hundred metres from Beverley station, in what was Hodgsons and still keeps Hodgsons Snug to the right of the door. A pub at 53 Lairgate, the long Georgian street that runs down the west side of Beverley between Saturday Market and the Guildhall. It is about ten minutes’ walk from the Westwood Road cattle grid, which makes it a sensible finish for a lap of the common. Two nineteenth-century cottages knocked together on Westwood Road, five minutes from Saturday Market and about the same from the Westwood cattle grid, which makes it the obvious pint after a lap of the common. The tiny snug seats only a handful of people and is the room dogs tend to end up in, though the main room behind the bar takes them too. Three changing cask beers, a courtyard out the back and food cooked fresh on the day. A 1930s John Smith's house on Ladygate beside Browns, run by the same family since 1972 and split into three: a bar with a period brick fireplace and bentwood seating, a front lounge with an open fire, and a rear snug. Three regular casks, two changing and a real cider on handpull, with good-value home-cooked lunches. Dogs are welcome in the bar at any time but in the lounge only once food service has finished, so an early evening pint is easier here than a lunchtime one. There are six purpose-built en-suite rooms at the back, though whether a dog may sleep in one is not published, so ask when you book. A Tudor-fronted inn on Saturday Market that has carried the Green Dragon name since 1765, now run by Mitchells and Butlers with ten handpulls on the bar and breakfast from ten in the morning. There is a heated courtyard round the back, sport on a great many screens including outside, and a quiz on Tuesdays. Dogs are allowed but only in part of the pub, so ask at the bar which part before you settle in. Known to everyone as Nellie’s after a long-serving licensee, this Samuel Smith’s house on Hengate beside the bus station is a warren of panelled corridors, gas lamps, bare boards and real fires that has barely changed in a century. It is one of the most photographed interiors in the East Riding and worth a look even if you are only passing through. Dogs are limited to the patio at the back, which is a genuine restriction in a pub whose whole point is the inside. ADD A PLACEBeverley Beck is the town's three-quarter-mile cut down to the River Hull, and the towpath from Beckside is the flattest serious walk in the East Riding. From the old warehouses and the Barge Preservation Society's shed the path runs dead level past the Beck lock to the river at Grovehill, then turns north along the flood bank all the way to Hull Bridge at Tickton. The bank is grazed in places and the drop into the Hull is steep and tidal with no easy way out, so a dog that swims is better on a lead along the river section. There is no dog control order anywhere on this route; East Riding of Yorkshire Council's own countryside guidance is simply to keep the dog on a lead, or in sight at all times and confident it will return promptly on command.
Six hundred acres of unfenced common pasture rising straight out of the top of town, five minutes from Saturday Market. The route climbs from the Westwood Road cattle grid across open grass to the stump of Black Mill, cuts north-west into Burton Bushes (the last surviving fragment of old wood-pasture on the common), then returns along the north edge and down the Cinder Footpath, the metalled path named in the Pasture Masters' own byelaws that runs from Sterne's Corner on York Road to Westwood Road. There are no fences and no gates once you are on, so a dog can run, but cattle and sheep are turned out from April to December and two unfenced public roads cross the common. The Pasture Masters' byelaw 14 asks only for proper control, not a lead, but a golf course and a racecourse occupy parts of the grass and neither is somewhere to let a dog loose.
Figham is the quiet one of Beverley's three commons, three hundred acres of unfenced grazing marsh wedged between the Beck, the River Hull and Long Lane, and on a weekday you can have it to yourself. It is held by the same Pasture Masters as the Westwood and run under the same 2004 byelaws, so the rule is proper control rather than a compulsory lead, but freemen's cattle are on the grass from April to December and the drainage dykes are deep, steep-sided and full of water. The circuit runs out to the river bank, south along the flood embankment with the Wolds behind you and the Hull running below, then back across the open pasture. There are no gates and no waymarks once you are through the entrance off Figham Road, and after heavy rain the low ground by the dykes turns to sucking clay.
The Hudson Way is the old Beverley to Market Weighton railway, closed in 1965 and now ten miles of level green corridor, and this is the town end of it. From the free car park at Molescroft the trail leaves the edge of Beverley on a surfaced stone path for the first kilometre, then drops to grass and cinder in a shallow cutting hedged with hawthorn and blackthorn all the way to the old Cherry Burton station. It is traffic-free from end to end, with no stiles and no stock on the trail itself, which makes it one of the few places round here you can walk a dog for two miles without touching a road. East Riding of Yorkshire Council manages it as a public right of way and asks that dogs are on a lead or under close control, partly because it is shared with cyclists coming through fast and quiet.

ADD A PLACEThe finest parish church in England sits at the bottom of Highgate with open lawns on three sides, and those lawns are the easiest bit of green in the middle of Beverley. The Minster itself takes assistance dogs only, and the Sanctuary and Herb Garden is reached through the building so it is assistance dogs only as well. The Secret Garden and the Quiet Garden, both off Highgate by the Parish Centre at number 38, are the two you can actually use, and the Minster says well behaved dogs are welcome in them provided you clear up. The grounds outside carry a long-standing council Dogs on Leads order, so clip the lead on at the churchyard edge.
