Beverley Beck is the town's three-quarter-mile cut down to the River Hull, and the towpath from Beckside is the flattest serious walk in the East Riding. From the old warehouses and the Barge Preservation Society's shed the path runs dead level past the Beck lock to the river at Grovehill, then turns north along the flood bank all the way to Hull Bridge at Tickton. The bank is grazed in places and the drop into the Hull is steep and tidal with no easy way out, so a dog that swims is better on a lead along the river section. There is no dog control order anywhere on this route; East Riding of Yorkshire Council's own countryside guidance is simply to keep the dog on a lead, or in sight at all times and confident it will return promptly on command.

Six hundred acres of unfenced common pasture rising straight out of the top of town, five minutes from Saturday Market. The route climbs from the Westwood Road cattle grid across open grass to the stump of Black Mill, cuts north-west into Burton Bushes (the last surviving fragment of old wood-pasture on the common), then returns along the north edge and down the Cinder Footpath, the metalled path named in the Pasture Masters' own byelaws that runs from Sterne's Corner on York Road to Westwood Road. There are no fences and no gates once you are on, so a dog can run, but cattle and sheep are turned out from April to December and two unfenced public roads cross the common. The Pasture Masters' byelaw 14 asks only for proper control, not a lead, but a golf course and a racecourse occupy parts of the grass and neither is somewhere to let a dog loose.

Figham is the quiet one of Beverley's three commons, three hundred acres of unfenced grazing marsh wedged between the Beck, the River Hull and Long Lane, and on a weekday you can have it to yourself. It is held by the same Pasture Masters as the Westwood and run under the same 2004 byelaws, so the rule is proper control rather than a compulsory lead, but freemen's cattle are on the grass from April to December and the drainage dykes are deep, steep-sided and full of water. The circuit runs out to the river bank, south along the flood embankment with the Wolds behind you and the Hull running below, then back across the open pasture. There are no gates and no waymarks once you are through the entrance off Figham Road, and after heavy rain the low ground by the dykes turns to sucking clay.

The Hudson Way is the old Beverley to Market Weighton railway, closed in 1965 and now ten miles of level green corridor, and this is the town end of it. From the free car park at Molescroft the trail leaves the edge of Beverley on a surfaced stone path for the first kilometre, then drops to grass and cinder in a shallow cutting hedged with hawthorn and blackthorn all the way to the old Cherry Burton station. It is traffic-free from end to end, with no stiles and no stock on the trail itself, which makes it one of the few places round here you can walk a dog for two miles without touching a road. East Riding of Yorkshire Council manages it as a public right of way and asks that dogs are on a lead or under close control, partly because it is shared with cyclists coming through fast and quiet.
