A 1930s John Smith's house on Ladygate beside Browns, run by the same family since 1972 and split into three: a bar with a period brick fireplace and bentwood seating, a front lounge with an open fire, and a rear snug. Three regular casks, two changing and a real cider on handpull, with good-value home-cooked lunches. Dogs are welcome in the bar at any time but in the lounge only once food service has finished, so an early evening pint is easier here than a lunchtime one. There are six purpose-built en-suite rooms at the back, though whether a dog may sleep in one is not published, so ask when you book.
