A nineteenth-century building on Market Place turned into a light, modern two-floor bar, and the best beer in Pocklington by a distance - mostly Brew York with guests from other Yorkshire brewers. There is pavement seating out front on the Market Place, a weekly quiz, and under-eighteens are welcome until eight. It is two minutes from the West Green car park and a mile from Canal Head, so it is the natural finish for the Pocklington Canal towpath. A big old coaching inn at 18 Market Place, a minute from the Pocklington Arts Centre and the top of Railway Street, with a lounge, a snug and a games room inside and a decked beer garden and car park behind. ADD A PLACEA licensed farm-shop cafe a mile out of Pocklington on the A1079, with indoor and outdoor seating, local produce from the shop next door and a doggy menu for the field alongside. The site's own rules say that well-behaved dogs are welcome in the cafe and the shop, but that every dog must be on a lead at all times anywhere on the premises. It is shut Mondays, opens ten till two on Tuesdays and Sundays and nine till three from Wednesday to Saturday. Handy as a start or finish for the Pocklington Canal, which is twenty minutes away at Canal Head.

ADD A PLACEFlat, sheltered and almost entirely off-road, the Pocklington Canal runs nine and a half miles from Canal Head down to the River Derwent at East Cottingwith. This out-and-back takes the top end from Canal Head past Top Lock, Silburn Lock and Coates Lock to the Bielby Arm and back, which is the tree-lined, un-restored half with humpbacked bridges and no boat traffic to speak of. Most of the canal is SSSI, so keep a dog out of the reed fringe in the nesting season. The Canal and River Trust's own towpath guidance asks for a short lead around locks and bridge holes and says plainly that dogs are not to swim in the canal, which matters here because the banks are steep-sided and hard to climb out of.
The steepest ground in Pocklington starts about four hundred yards from the Market Place, and this circuit takes it. From the free car park off Railway Street the route climbs The Balk out of town, up over Chapel Hill with the whole Vale of York opening out behind you, then contours the edge of the Kilnwick Percy golf course to Kilnwick Percy Hall, whose forty-seven acres of parkland, woodland walks and lake are open to anyone from dawn until dusk. The return drops south-west on field paths and green lanes above Burnby. It is chalk and clay underfoot, genuinely muddy from November to March, and part of the outward leg runs along the edge of a working golf course where a loose dog is not welcome.

ADD A WALKA year-round campsite a mile out of Pocklington on the A1079 with grass and hard-standing pitches, all with electric, plus fully furnished caravans, a heated wet-room block, an undercover washing-up area, a licensed cafe and a farm shop. The site's own rules are specific: "Dogs are welcome, a maximum of 2 per unit" and "All dogs MUST be kept on a lead at all times when on the site." Dogs are barred from the toilets and showers but well-behaved ones are welcome in the cafe and the shop, and breeds listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are refused. There is no dog-walking field included, though the site's own Pock Paws secure field can be hired by the half hour.

ADD A PLACEA secure hire-by-the-slot dog field at The Mile on the A1079 side of Pocklington, in front of the farm shop, open every day from seven in the morning until eight at night. Slots are half an hour at £3.50 or a full hour at £7.00, and the ratio is one person to two dogs with a maximum of six dogs in the field at once unless agreed beforehand. Inside there is agility equipment, an undercover seating area, a shaded picnic bench, water and a doggy menu from the cafe. The operator warns that there is no netting under the wire, so a determined digger needs watching, and dogs must be vaccinated, wearing ID tags, accompanied at all times, and neither aggressive nor in season.
