Allerthorpe Woods Forest Circular

Allerthorpe Woods is a Forestry England pine plantation on the sandy Vale of York flats west of Pocklington, laid over one of only three surviving patches of northern lowland heath in the vale. From the pay-and-display car park off the Allerthorpe to Melbourne road the ride system loops south through the pines and out along the heathy rides on the east side, all of it flat, sandy and dry underfoot even in February. Forestry England allows dogs here, but the fenced inner block leased to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as Allerthorpe Common Nature Reserve does not: the Trust states plainly that no dogs are permitted on the reserve, for ground-nesting birds and for the adders. Keep to the forest rides and outside the reserve fence and the whole wood is yours.
