Free roadside parking round the green at Huggate, no bays and no charge, room for a dozen cars. The Wolds Inn car park is for customers only.

Huggate is the highest village in the Wolds and has the deepest pond and the deepest well, and the Yorkshire Wolds Way runs right past the green outside the Wolds Inn. Going south the trail drops into Horse Dale and Holm Dale, a pair of steep-sided chalk valleys with no road, no house and no phone signal, and comes out on the Millington Dale road under the pastures. Taken out and back it is a proper hill walk on grass and chalk track with two stiff climbs and no water anywhere along it. The dale bottoms are grazed by sheep and much of the ground either side is access land where a short lead is required from March to July.

Around farm animals and horses it must be on a lead, and on a short lead in fields with sheep. No Public Spaces Protection Order applies to this route; the council's dog orders here cover only fenced children's play areas, school grounds, listed churchyards and cemeteries, and four named beaches on the coast. Parts of the dales either side of the trail are registered open access land, where the statutory rule is a lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July, and a lead at any time near livestock.
