Great Givendale is barely a hamlet - a farm, a few cottages and St Ethelburga's, a tiny Victorian church rebuilt on a Norman site with springs and ponds in the hollow below it. The Yorkshire Wolds Way comes through on its way from Millington, and this circuit takes the trail south down the dale side to Millington village, past the Gait Inn, then climbs back out on the far side of the beck and returns along the wold top with the Vale of York filling the western horizon. It is chalk grassland and sheep pasture nearly the whole way, with no fences between the path and the stock, and the dale sides are steep enough to matter in the wet. There is no car park at Great Givendale, only the verge by the church, and no facilities of any kind.

THE SMALL PRINTEast Riding of Yorkshire Council's countryside dog-walking guidance: keep your dog on a lead, or keep it in sight at all times, be aware of what it is doing and be confident it will return to you promptly on command. Around farm animals and horses it must be on a lead, and on a short lead in fields with sheep. No Public Spaces Protection Order applies to this route; the council's dog orders here cover only fenced children's play areas, school grounds, listed churchyards and cemeteries, and four named beaches on the coast. The dale sides here are grazed sheep pasture with no fence between path and stock for most of the route, so this is lead ground rather than a place to let a dog run. Parts of the higher ground are registered open access land, where the statutory rule is a short lead from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.
