Warter is an estate village of thatched cottages round a green with the old priory church at the top, and almost nobody stops there, which is exactly why this is a good walk. The Yorkshire Wolds Way comes over the hill from Nunburnholme and drops into the village on Chapel Hill, and this circuit takes the trail out along the wold top, down into the beck valley at Nunburnholme past the Saxon cross in the church, and back on the estate track under Warter Wold. It is nearly all Warter Priory estate land - arable, sheep pasture and shooting cover - crossed by rights of way, and the shoot runs from October to the end of January. There is no shop, no pub and no car park in Warter, so this is a park-on-the-green-and-be-polite walk.
