Dog-friendly South Cave

A hundred-and-fifty-year-old pub at 61 Market Place inside the South Cave conservation area, forty yards along from the Fox and Coney and a few minutes from where the Yorkshire Wolds Way climbs out of the village up Beverley Road. The main bar was remodelled recently and there is a conservatory and a beer garden behind, which is the easiest place to sit with a muddy dog after Comber Dale. Cask ales change regularly and there is a weekly quiz and live music. CAMRA records the pub as dog friendly, a branch survey rather than the pub's own words.

A grade II listed inn at 52 Market Place, right on the main thoroughfare through South Cave and the obvious refuelling stop at the southern gateway of the Yorkshire Wolds Way. It was refurbished in 2014 and now mixes traditional and contemporary rooms with a wide range of regional cask ales and twelve en-suite bedrooms upstairs. Dogs are welcome in the bar area only, so if you want to eat with a dog take a bar table rather than the dining side. This is recorded by CAMRA branch survey rather than in the pub's own words, and the inn publishes no bedroom policy for dogs.

A small cafe at the West End of South Cave, the far end of the village from the Market Place and the closest food to where the Yorkshire Wolds Way threads out towards Little Wold Plantation. Its own site describes it in one line as a dog friendly cafe in the heart of South Cave on the edge of the Wolds Way, and it makes everything on the counter itself, including the dog treats. It opens nine to half four Monday to Saturday and ten to four on Sunday, which covers the whole of a normal walking day. Expect a handful of tables rather than a dining room, so on a wet Saturday it is worth timing your arrival away from noon.

A farm shop, butcher, deli and restaurant on the twelve-hundred-acre Drewton Estate, on the road north out of South Cave where the chalk starts to rise into the Wolds. The Kitchen's own page says the dining area has a dedicated dog-friendly area, with indoor seating, water bowls and room for a dog to stretch out, so this is a proper indoor table rather than a bench outside. The tearoom and the private dining room are not part of that, so ask for the dog area when you arrive rather than seating yourself. The estate has its own waymarked walks from the same car park, which makes it the easiest combined walk and lunch in the patch.

The Yorkshire Wolds Way leaves South Cave up Beverley Road and this is the classic circuit off the first few miles of it, through Little Wold Plantation and down into Comber Dale, one of the deepest and quietest dry valleys at the southern end of the Wolds. At the head of Comber Dale the trail slips into the cutting of the never-finished Hull and Barnsley railway at Weedley Springs, then climbs steeply out into East Dale with the chalk showing through the turf. The return is on the wold-top tracks by Swinescaife and back down the plantation edge to the village. This is the biggest climbing in the patch and every field on the tops is working farmland.

A castellated country house on Church Hill at the foot of the Wolds escarpment, now a hotel and golf resort with its own parkland, ten minutes on foot from South Cave Market Place and the start of the Yorkshire Wolds Way. The hotel's own pet policy allows dogs in a limited number of designated ground-floor rooms which must be requested and confirmed when booking, at twenty-five pounds per pet per night. Dogs are not permitted in the restaurant, spa, health club or function rooms, and must be kept on a lead or in a carrier anywhere in the outdoor grounds. Assistance dogs are accepted free of charge and are allowed in all those areas.

Two converted farm buildings let as holiday cottages on the Drewton Estate above South Cave, a short walk from the farm shop and straight onto the estate's own walks and the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Drewton's own booking page says both cottages accept up to two well-behaved dogs at twenty-five pounds each, which is one of the few clearly stated dog allowances anywhere in this corner of the Riding. The third property on the estate, Kettlethorpe Cottage, does not take dogs at all, so check which one you are booking. Everything is on the estate side of the A1034, away from through traffic.
