Directions to the start →

The southern half of the Market Weighton Canal Trail, leaving the canal bridge in Newport and following the cut dead straight across Wallingfen and the Broomfleet levels to the eighteenth-century Weighton Lock, where the canal drops into the Humber opposite Whitton Island. It is completely flat, largely unshaded, and the reed fringe holds kingfishers, herons and marsh harriers over Broomfleet Washlands. The trail's own guidance says dogs are welcome the whole way but asks that they are kept out of the ponds and reed beds and on a lead where signs say so, because parts of the bank are grazed. Parts are single file and there are kissing gates at Sand Lane and the Washlands.

THE SMALL PRINTThe Market Weighton Canal Trail's own guidance: dogs are permitted along the whole trail, must be kept on a lead where signs ask for it to protect livestock and wildlife, must be kept out of the ponds and reed beds, and waste must be removed.
