The floodbank south of Broomfleet village runs out to Broomfleet Island, a low sandy spit thrown up inside the estuary where the Humber widens below Weighton Lock, with firm sand and shell at low water and a mile of saltmarsh and reed behind it. Nothing here is promenade: the way in is on foot from the level crossing at the end of Station Road, over the Market Weighton Canal and out along the bank past the Washlands. There is no seasonal dog ban of any kind on this shore. The tide fills the creeks behind the island far faster than it looks from the bank, and the deep-water channel used by ships up to Goole runs close in, so keep a dog out of the water.
THE SMALL PRINTEast Riding of Yorkshire Council's seasonal beach dog ban runs 1 May to 30 September and reaches only three towns: Bridlington, from the harbour to the Limekiln Lane slipway on North Beach and from the harbour to the outflow pipe opposite the pumping station on South Beach; Hornsea, from the groyne under the Marine pub south to the groyne just south of the Sands Lane slipway; and Withernsea, from the steps north of the Seaside Road slipway to the steps opposite the memorial gardens. Nothing on the Humber or Ouse shore is covered, so this stretch is open to dogs every day of the year.
Nobody has written one for Broomfleet Humber foreshore. If you have been with the dog, you would be the first — and the first review is the one everybody reads.
