Free on-street parking on Cowgate and Kidd Lane around the green; it fills on Sunday lunchtimes because of the Green Dragon, so arrive early or use Welton Low Road

The National Trail's own short circuit from Welton village green, climbing gently out of the beck valley on part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way and returning down the dry chalk valley of Welton Dale. It is the prettiest three and a half miles at the southern end of the Wolds: beech hanger on both sides of the dale, a folly wall, and a long view back down to the Humber from the top of the wold. National Trails grades it easy, with gentle gradients and no stiles, and the Green Dragon on Cowgate is at the finish. The dale bottom is working sheep pasture, which is the one thing to plan for with a dog.

THE SMALL PRINTWelton Dale is grazed. The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail asks walkers to keep dogs under close control and on a lead near livestock; sheep are usually on the valley sides rather than the floor, but they move.

A seventeenth-century coaching inn on Cowgate looking over Welton's village green and the beck, a mile and a half up from Brough station and the obvious finish for a walk into Welton Dale. The pub runs a dedicated dog-friendly page and states dogs are welcome in the bar and the beer garden, with the patio and the space under the bar tables offered as somewhere for a dog to settle. The restaurant side is not included in that welcome, so ask before you take a table on the dining side. The green outside has a duck pond, which is not fenced, and the lane up towards the dale carries occasional farm traffic.
