Our drawing of the route — the shape of the walk, not a navigation aid. Carry OS Explorer on the hill.
The flattest good walk in the south of the patch: out of Brough station down Station Road to the haven where Welton Beck meets the estuary, then east along the top of the Humber floodbank with the whole width of the river on your right and the Lincolnshire wolds across it. The bank runs past the aircraft works and out to Welton Waters, a flooded gravel lake now used as a sailing and paddleboard centre, before you turn inland and come back into Brough on Welton Road and Skillings Lane. The Roman ferry crossing at Petuaria was on this exact reach, and the ground under the bank is the old Roman shoreline. There are no fences between the bank top and the mud, and the tide across those flats comes in quickly.

The tidal inlet at the foot of Brough where the Welton Beck runs out into the Humber, with the boatyard and the sailing club on one side and mudflat, saltmarsh and reedbed on the other, reached by the lane past the Ferry Inn. This is not a sandy resort beach but it is the closest thing to open shore in this patch, and it carries no seasonal dog ban of any kind: East Riding of Yorkshire Council's dog control order names only Bridlington North Beach, Bridlington South Beach, Hornsea Beach and Withernsea Beach, all of them out on the North Sea coast, so nothing on the Humber shore is restricted at any time of year. The estuary tide here comes in fast across flat mud and the channel is deep, so this is a place for a lead near the water. The old Roman crossing at Petuaria was on this same reach.
