Noddle Hill Nature Reserve Circuit

A local nature reserve on the northern edge of Bransholme, all rough meadow, hawthorn scrub, drain-side willow and a large fishing lake, and one of only two designated local nature reserves inside the Hull city boundary. The reserve is Hull City Council land, not East Riding, and the council closes only the play areas to dogs; the reserve paths themselves carry no lead rule. This circuit picks the reserve up from Bransholme Road, works round the lake and the meadows, and comes back past the sports pitches off Noddle Hill Way. Ground-nesting birds use the rough grass from March to July, and the drains that edge the reserve are steep-sided and deep.

One of the city's easternmost parks, on the Bilton Grange estate and reached from Amethyst Road or Valiant Drive, with bowling greens, baseball diamonds, a trim trail, a wildlife area, a community garden and a set of low hills that the Sunday junior parkrun uses for its two-kilometre course. What makes it worth the drive with a dog is the dog agility area, which is about the only piece of purpose-built dog provision Hull City Council publishes anywhere in the city. Hull is a unitary authority entirely separate from East Riding and operates no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all, and unlike the council's pages for its other parks this one publishes no dog exclusion of any kind. The park is open around the clock and free; the toilets only open when the water play area is running.

The Trod is the old raised footpath that carried people between Sutton village and Hull across the carrs, and Hull City Council's signposted route uses it to link St James's Church on Church Street to the wildflower meadow at Rockford Fields. It leaves the village past The Ship Inn, works through Hornbeams Close and Tweendykes Road, crosses the very busy Sutton Road and drops through Glenwood Close onto the meadow, then comes home along the Hornsea Rail Trail and Trans Pennine Trail past the Barbara Robson Playing Field. This is Hull City Council, a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order of any kind, and the council's route notes ask only that you pick up after your dog. Sutton Road is fast and there is a signalled crossing about 340 yards away if the direct crossing looks unwise.

Hull City Council calls Bude Park one of the largest parks in the city, and it is the open ground that separates the older Bransholme estates from the newer Kingswood development, entered from Bude Road or from Ennerdale. It is mostly wide mown grass and sports pitches rather than Victorian planting, which makes it an unusually good place to throw a ball, and there is a multi-use games area, an outdoor gym and a seasonal water play area at the Ennerdale end. Rockford Fields is a genuine wild hay meadow left over from the monastic farming of the Sutton carrs, and it survives inside east Hull because the old Hull to Hornsea railway walled it off on one side and the Foredyke Stream on the other. Hull City Council's signposted circuit starts at the Sutton Road underpass on the rail trail, drops onto the meadow, follows the Foredyke Stream track past the allotments and a strip of young woodland, and comes back over Sutton Trod, the raised path that carried villagers into town before the roads were made up. Kingswood was built on drained carrland in the 1990s and 2000s, and the Engine Drain that made the building possible now runs through it as a tree-lined trail, which is the one properly green thing in a district otherwise made of retail sheds and new housing. Hull City Council's signposted circuit starts at the Kingswood Retail Park bus interchange by Asda, picks the drain up at the zebra crossing and follows it past the playground and Kingswood Parks Primary School to the Village Green shops, returning by Runnymede Avenue, Richmond Way, Barnes Way, Ashcombe Road and Althorp Road. It is all Hull City Council land and highway, and Hull has no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order at all, so the council's own guidance for the route asks only that you pick up after your dog. It is flat and hard-surfaced almost throughout, which makes it a good winter option, but there are several busy estate-road crossings.

At 130 acres this is Hull's largest park and the city's default dog walk, an 1887 Victorian layout off Holderness Road with the Ferens boating lake at its heart, a model yacht pond, the Khyber Pass rock folly and its waterfall, and long tarmac carriage drives that stay walkable in winter. This is Hull City Council land, a unitary authority entirely separate from East Riding, and Hull's rules are its own. The whole park is open to dogs except the enclosed children's play area and splash pad, where the council's page says only assistance dogs are allowed; the free Animal Education Centre with its farm and exotic stock is a further reason to have a lead to hand. This is the one Hull City Council walking route that comes with a lead instruction, and it is worth knowing why: it runs through the Eastern Cemetery, still an active burial ground, entered by the stone gates off Preston Road and circled on its own service roads past the red-brick chapel. Beyond the cemetery it takes Poorhouse Lane past Craven Park, joins the tree-lined track on the old Hull to Withernsea railway, crosses Greatfield Lane and Marfleet Lane by the site of Marfleet station, then goes out across Marfleet fields and over a footbridge on the Marfleet drain. Hull is a unitary authority with no dog control Public Spaces Protection Order, so the lead here is a courtesy rule attached to a working cemetery rather than a byelaw. Foredyke Stream is one of the old drains that once carried water off east Hull into the River Hull, and the segregated path along it from Chamberlain Road is a quiet green line through streets that have very little other green in them. The route runs north past the allotments and a wooded stretch, crosses the ancient meadow at Rockford Fields, joins the Hornsea Rail Trail and Trans Pennine Trail south, then comes back through Dunscombe Park. Rockford Fields has been grazed or mown since monastic days and carries a genuinely rich mix of grasses and wildflowers, including the uncommon crow garlic. The Hull end of the old Hull and Hornsea railway, closed in 1964 and now a hard-surfaced permissive bridleway that runs dead straight for ten miles to the sea. This section leaves the industrial edge of Sutton Fields off Leads Road, crosses the Bransholme estates on a green corridor of hawthorn, bramble and ash, and slips over the boundary into East Riding of Yorkshire just south of Swine. That boundary matters: the first half is Hull City Council, which has no dog control order at all, and the second half is East Riding, whose own page for the trail asks for close control rather than a lead. It is shared with cyclists and horse riders throughout and they come through fast and quiet, so a recall that works is worth more here than anywhere else in the city.

A rare survival of a proper village pub on Main Street in Withernwick, three miles inland from the cliff at Aldbrough and worth the detour off the coast road. It is a free house serving up to three real ales, Tetley Bitter as the regular with changing beers from Great Newsome and Wold Top, plus home-cooked food, and there is a real fire, its own parking and a quiet room to sit in. The kitchen runs Wednesday to Sunday and the pub is shut altogether on Mondays and Tuesdays. A working-docks walk rather than a pretty one, and the better for it: Hull City Council's signposted circuit leaves St John's Church on Rosmead Street, crosses the park with its playground and exercise zone, and takes the old Withernsea branch line cycleway to the blue bridge over the railway into the dock estate. From there it follows the Holderness Drain down to Hedon Road, past the Alexandra Dock gatehouse and the restored hundred-ton steam crane that Associated British Ports keeps on the quay, with a short optional spur out to the Humber bank or into Hedon Road Cemetery, before returning past Hull Prison and up Southcoates Lane. Seventy-five acres of open grass, fishing lake and rough grassland squeezed between Beresford Avenue and the western bank of the River Hull, and the largest single space in north Hull where a dog can properly stretch out. The route runs north up the flood-bank path beside the tidal river, past the fishing lake and the skate park, then loops back across the pitches on the Oak Road side.
