A small, sheltered patch of sand tucked within Whitby's main pier walls on the east side of the harbour, below the 199 steps. The council removed its dogs-on-lead restriction in the 2025 Public Space Protection Order, so dogs are now welcome all year — though access is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Whitby's big sandy town beach below the West Cliff, with a gentle slope suitable for wheelchairs and beach wheelchairs available for hire. In summer the banned zone runs from the West Pier to the steps half way along the beach chalets, so head north past the chalets where dogs are welcome all year.

Six and a half linear miles of about three hours on the old railway, a steady, barely noticeable 145-metre pull out of the Esk valley and then a long easy run south, all on hard trackbed with no stiles and no gates that matter. Start at Whitby station and come back on the X93 bus from Robin Hood's Bay, which runs roughly hourly and takes dogs at the driver's discretion. The crossing of Larpool Viaduct is fenced and 40 metres above the river, the track is enclosed by hedge and cutting for most of its length and makes excellent off-lead ground, and there is water at the Hawsker and Ramsdale becks.

Seven linear miles and about three and a half hours along the finest clifftop mile-for-mile on this coast, climbing 300 metres in and out of Saltwick, Maw Wyke and Ness Point with several long stepped descents. Start at Whitby Abbey and take the X93 bus back from Robin Hood's Bay, or reverse it and finish with the 199 steps. The path is grass and beaten earth almost throughout with beck crossings to drink from, but the edge is unfenced, undercut and in places within a metre of the route, most of it crosses grazed sheep pasture, and there is no safe way down to the beach until the Bay itself.

Five muddy miles of about two and a half hours through steep-sided beck woodland behind the town, climbing 190 metres in short sharp pulls between two old mill sites and returning over farmland to Larpool. Start at the Larpool Lane end of the Cinder Track above Whitby, where there is free roadside parking, a ten-minute walk from the station. The becks run all year and the woods are shaded and enclosed, so this is a good hot-day walk with plenty to drink, but there are several awkward stiles a large dog will need lifting over, the field paths carry sheep, and the waterfall at Golden Grove sits in a private garden and can only be seen from the path.

Eight miles and around four hours, out along the Cleveland Way past Saltwick Nab to High Hawsker and back on the level Cinder Track over Larpool Viaduct, with 280 metres of climbing concentrated in the little ravines on the cliff leg. Start at the Abbey pay-and-display car park at the top of the 199 steps, or leave the car in town and walk up, since the Abbey car park fills by mid-morning in season. The Cinder Track half is a fine off-lead stretch, but the outward cliff path runs within a stride or two of an unfenced 50-metre drop and crosses grazed fields, and Saltwick Bay below is a well-known tide trap with a rising sea cutting off the beach access.

A 7.7-mile circular of about three and a quarter hours, out on quiet lanes past Sneaton Castle and Newholm to the Hart Inn at Sandsend, then back along the sands and the West Cliff promenade into Whitby; easy going, but well over half of it is tarmac. Start at Whitby bus station or the Church Street car parks, and note that the 4 and X4 run to Sandsend every half hour if you want to cut it short. Sandsend and Whitby West Cliff both close their central beaches to dogs in summer, the return along the sands needs a falling tide, and the Khyber Pass climb back into town is on pavement, so plan this one on a lead with the tide table to hand.

Water bowls

A 2.4-mile town circular of about seventy minutes, entirely on pavement, pier deck and park path, with 90 metres of climbing taken on the Khyber Pass and a set of steps up from the harbour. Start at the swing bridge in the middle of town, five minutes from the station and the bus stops, with the Marina and Church Street car parks both close by. It is an all-weather, all-tide option when the cliffs are unwalkable and there are water bowls outside several Pier Road shops, but it is a lead walk from end to end, the outer pier has open drops on both sides, and the West Cliff beach below is shut to dogs in summer.

Heading outside there is an extensive fully enclosed garden complete with outdoor WIFI summer house with patio area and garden furniture for al fresco dining and two charcoal BBQs for those warm summer evenings. The garden also has a fire pit with seating ideal for toasting marshmallows and enjoying those clear night skies. There is also outdoor table tennis and lots of other garden games available for you to use. There is ample off-road parking for up to 6 cars on the driveway. Access to 3.5 private wood The Old Plantation which features WW2 remnants and offers a short cut to the Yorkshire Air Museum. Four miles and about two hours on broad estate carriage drives through one of the finest beech and oak woods on the coast, out to the ruined thirteenth-century castle on its ridge and back down the other side of the valley, with 160 metres of easy climbing. Start at the East Row car park in Sandsend, a few minutes from the woodland gate, with the 4 and X4 buses from Whitby stopping beside the beck. The tracks are wide and dry and the becks run all year, but access is by the estate's permission on set days only and dogs must be on the lead throughout the woods, where there is a shoot and roe deer.

An easy 4.4-mile circular of just under two hours along the old Whitby to Loftus trackbed past Sandsend Ness to the Deep Grove alum quarries and the bricked-up tunnel mouths, returning over the fields above the shore. Park at the East Row or Sandsend Ness pay-and-display car parks, or take the 4 or X4 bus from Whitby, which stops beside the beck. The trackbed is wide, level and good for off-lead running, but the central Sandsend beach is closed to dogs in summer and the cliff above the quarries is soft and slipping, so keep to the path there.

A short but steep 3.4-mile circular of about two hours climbing 165 metres up the Cleveland Way to Lythe church on its shoulder above the sea, then dropping back to the beck by field path and the old bank road. Start at the Sandsend main car park by the beck, pay-and-display and often full by ten in summer, with the 4 and X4 buses from Whitby stopping at the same spot. The views back over the whole bay are the point, there is water in East Row Beck at both ends, but the climb crosses grazed fields with stiles, Lythe Bank is a fast and narrow road, and the central Sandsend beach is closed to dogs in summer.

An easy 3.3-mile circular of an hour and a half through the oak and hazel of Little Beck Wood, taking in the Hermitage, a room hollowed out of a single boulder in 1790, a hidden waterfall in the wood and Falling Foss itself, 30 feet of it, at the end. Start from the Midge Hall car park at Falling Foss, signed off the A171 at Red Gate; the tea garden here opens April to September, ten until four. Shaded, enclosed and full of water for a hot dog, though the path runs along a steep bank above the beck in several places and the wooden steps near the falls go greasy in winter.

A 6.4-mile forest and moorland circular of about three hours with 200 metres of climbing, from the waterfall at Falling Foss up to May Beck, round Newton House Plantation to York Cross on Sneaton High Moor, then back over Leas Head to the Hermitage and the coin-studded wishing tree. Park at Midge Hall by Falling Foss, signed off the Whitby to Scarborough road at Red Gate, or at May Beck a mile to the south; the tea garden beside the falls opens April to September, ten until four. Superb for a dog, with the beck alongside most of the wooded sections and forest track to run on, but the moor crossing is boggy after rain and is nesting ground in spring.
