Dog-friendly Whitby

A Skinner Street coffee shop known for home-cooked food and generous portions at sensible prices. Dog treats are kept on hand for diners with canine friends in tow.

The famous harbourfront pub at the foot of the 199 steps keeps water bowls at the ready and promises plenty of fuss from the team. Dogs get their own 'Sir Woofchester's Pawfect Dog Menu', though note they are only permitted indoors until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

A tiny, traditional two-bar pub in Whitby's old town where dogs are 'more than welcome in both bar areas'. There are water bowls in each bar and treats are usually available — unless Dave, the resident Miniature Schnauzer, has eaten them all.

A snug Church Street freehouse where well-behaved dogs are invited to stretch out beside the real log fire in the bar. It even runs a full 'Sir Woolfchester' dog menu, from Bark Bangers to a fish-and-chips dinner bowl.

Seven miles of heritage-coast clifftop between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, with bay and beach views for most of the way. It is the classic coastal leg of the Cleveland Way, dropping you into the huddled red roofs of Bay at the far end.

Ten mildly undulating miles shadowing the River Esk from Egton Bridge to the sea at Whitby, on good paths, old toll roads and field tracks. There is a steepish dip and climb over a disused railway line near the end, and the village train makes it an easy one-way walk.

The old Whitby to Scarborough railway, 21.5 largely traffic-free miles of cinder path — the stretch from Robin Hood's Bay climbs gently through woodland to Ravenscar in about four and a half miles. Sea views come and go through the trees, and the X93 bus can carry tired legs back to the start.

A 7.7-mile circular of about three and a quarter hours, out on quiet lanes past Sneaton Castle and Newholm to the Hart Inn at Sandsend, then back along the sands and the West Cliff promenade into Whitby; easy going, but well over half of it is tarmac. Start at Whitby bus station or the Church Street car parks, and note that the 4 and X4 run to Sandsend every half hour if you want to cut it short. Sandsend and Whitby West Cliff both close their central beaches to dogs in summer, the return along the sands needs a falling tide, and the Khyber Pass climb back into town is on pavement, so plan this one on a lead with the tide table to hand.

Perched on the cliff above Saltwick Bay on the Cleveland Way, with dogs welcome in the holiday caravans and on touring pitches alike. There's a dog shower for post-beach rinses, dog groceries in the on-park shop, and direct access down to Saltwick Bay for a run on the sands.

A 1691 coaching inn on cobbled Church Street, at the foot of the 199 steps. Dogs may stay in four named rooms — Wakeful, Warrior Queen, Provider and Scoresby — for an extra £10, and are welcome in the residents' lounge and bar though not the main restaurant.

A 40%-scale replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour sailing from Whitby harbour, near the Magpie Café. The crew's own words: 'Sea dogs are welcome onboard FREE OF CHARGE' — though it's worth ringing ahead as sailings depend on weather and tide.

Steam across the moors between Whitby and Pickering with your dog beside you — there's a small charge for your pooch to travel, and you can hop off at halts like Newtondale for a leg-stretch on the way. Dogs are welcome on ordinary services but not on the dining trains, and Pickering station has a dog-friendly tea room waiting at the far end.

The gaunt clifftop ruin that inspired Dracula, reached by the 199 steps from the old town. English Heritage's facilities page states simply 'Dogs welcome on leads', so your dog can wander the headland ruins with you.
