A 2.4-mile town circular of about seventy minutes, entirely on pavement, pier deck and park path, with 90 metres of climbing taken on the Khyber Pass and a set of steps up from the harbour. Start at the swing bridge in the middle of town, five minutes from the station and the bus stops, with the Marina and Church Street car parks both close by. It is an all-weather, all-tide option when the cliffs are unwalkable and there are water bowls outside several Pier Road shops, but it is a lead walk from end to end, the outer pier has open drops on both sides, and the West Cliff beach below is shut to dogs in summer.

THE SMALL PRINTThe signed central stretch of Whitby West Cliff beach is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's dog control public spaces protection order, with a £100 fixed penalty. Between those dates use Tate Hill Sands under the east cliff or the northern stretch towards Upgang and Sandsend, both open to dogs all year, though Tate Hill is lead-only. The whole route is on street, pier and park where dogs must be on the lead, and the outer harbour pier has unguarded drops on both sides.
