Seven linear miles and about three and a half hours along the finest clifftop mile-for-mile on this coast, climbing 300 metres in and out of Saltwick, Maw Wyke and Ness Point with several long stepped descents. Start at Whitby Abbey and take the X93 bus back from Robin Hood's Bay, or reverse it and finish with the 199 steps. The path is grass and beaten earth almost throughout with beck crossings to drink from, but the edge is unfenced, undercut and in places within a metre of the route, most of it crosses grazed sheep pasture, and there is no safe way down to the beach until the Bay itself.

THE SMALL PRINTThis is a lead walk almost from end to end: the Cleveland Way here runs along an unfenced, actively eroding cliff edge, often within a metre of the path, and crosses sheep pasture for most of its length. Do not attempt the beach route between Whitby and the Bay, which is cut off by every tide.
