Dog-friendly Robin Hood’s Bay

A cosy village bistro that welcomes one well-behaved dog per party, though space is tight so large dogs cannot be accommodated. Booking ahead is recommended, particularly in season.

The dockside pub at the very bottom of the village, where a wall plaque marks the finish of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk and the downstairs bar is named in his honour. Its own site says it plainly: dogs are welcome throughout the pub.

A 6.5-mile circular of just under three hours with 190 metres of ups and downs, heading north from Robin Hood's Bay on the Cleveland Way past Ness Point to Maw Wyke Hole, then turning inland to Hawsker and returning down the level Cinder Track. Park at the top car park above the village on Station Road, because the bank down to the dock is one in three and there is almost nowhere to leave a car at the bottom. The Cinder Track is a wide, well-drained old railway that suits a dog off the lead, but the outward cliff path is unfenced and undercut around Ness Point and the fields between the coast and Hawsker are grazed.

A clifftop Victorian hotel at the top of the village with dedicated dog-friendly rooms in The Captain's Quarters, at £10 per dog per night. Dog bowls, a blanket and treats are laid out for your dog before you arrive, and the beach is a ten-minute amble down through the village.

A quiet family-run park at Fylingthorpe, a stroll across the fields from Robin Hood's Bay itself. Dogs are welcome on the condition they stay on a short lead and are never left unattended.

The famous old mill hostel tucked in a smugglers' cove just south of Robin Hood's Bay — a brilliant budget stay, but not one for dog owners. YHA states plainly that pets are not permitted at Boggle Hole; only assistance dogs are welcome, with notice at the time of booking.
