A 5.4-mile circular of about two and three quarter hours south along the Cleveland Way above the tangled undercliff of Beast Cliff, returning on the Cinder Track, with 190 metres of climbing and a coastal path that is narrow, bracken-choked and slow in high summer. Start at Station Square in Ravenscar, where roadside parking is free and the old station building marks the Cinder Track. The railway leg is level, enclosed and excellent off-lead ground, but the outward path runs along the rim of a 100-metre landslip terrace with no fence at all, and the moorland edge holds ground-nesting birds in spring.

THE SMALL PRINTThe Cleveland Way above Beast Cliff runs unfenced along the rim of a 100-metre landslip with bracken hiding the edge, so dogs stay on the lead for the coastal half. Ground-nesting birds use the moor edge from 1 March to 31 July and sheep graze the fields inland.
