Six miles and about three hours combining the Cleveland Way, the Peak Alum Works terraces and the Cinder Track, with 240 metres of climbing and one genuinely steep, stepped descent to the alum quarries and back. Start at the National Trust Coastal Centre in Ravenscar, where there is a small car park and the seasonal Coastliner bus stops on the main road. The Cinder Track section is fine off-lead running, but the alum works sit on an unstable cliff terrace with unfenced drops and open shafts, the Cleveland Way crosses sheep pasture throughout, and there is no water on the top so carry some.

THE SMALL PRINTThe Peak Alum Works loop crosses an unstable cliff terrace with unfenced drops and old workings, and the Cleveland Way here runs through sheep pasture, so dogs must be on the lead for the coastal half. Ground-nesting birds use the moorland edge above Ravenscar from March to July.
