Pub DOGS WELCOME

The Carpenters Arms

YO43 3BQ
No reviews yet

A small one-room local on Southgate at the edge of Market Weighton near the A1079, with a proper regulars’ atmosphere and none of the polish of the Market Place pubs. Picnic tables sit on the courtyard alongside the building, which is where most people with dogs end up on a warm afternoon. It is about ten minutes on foot from the Hudson Way car park off Station Road, so it works as the end of the rail trail. The dog policy comes from CAMRA WhatPub, surveyed by branch volunteers on 17 October 2020, not from the pub itself.

Pub DOGS WELCOME

The Griffin Inn

YO43 3AW
No reviews yet

On the Market Place in the middle of Market Weighton, and one of very few pubs outside Lancashire selling Thwaites cask beer, with two on at a time. It is a broad-church local popular across all ages rather than a beer-nerd pub, and there is a garden behind. Handy for both the Hudson Way rail trail and the Yorkshire Wolds Way, which cross the town within a few hundred yards of the door. The dog-friendly listing comes from CAMRA WhatPub, surveyed by branch volunteers on 21 January 2022, rather than the pub’s own statement.

Pub DOGS WELCOME

The Londesborough Arms

YO43 3AH
No reviews yet

A very large Georgian town house of about 1780 on the High Street, with three open fires and two bars - a small one carrying an old painted ceiling mural, and a bigger panelled room with reproduction mahogany. There are ten en-suite rooms upstairs run as a bed and breakfast, though whether dogs can go in them is not published, so ask when you book. This is the obvious base for walking the Hudson Way and the Wolds Way out of Market Weighton. The dog-friendly listing for the bar comes from CAMRA WhatPub, surveyed by branch volunteers on 21 January 2022, not from the house itself.

Hudson Way Rail Trail: Kiplingcotes to Market Weighton

YO43 3NA
3.3 MI · 1H 35M · 95% OFF-ROAD

The best three miles of the old Beverley to Market Weighton line, running west from the surviving platform and station house at Kiplingcotes through a deep chalk cutting and out onto an embankment above Goodmanham. This is the stretch managed as a linear nature reserve, thick with cowslips and marjoram on the cutting sides in summer and completely traffic-free, ending at the old Market Weighton station site a few minutes from the Market Place. It is a grass and cinder surface for most of the way with a made stone path for the last kilometre into town, and it can be genuinely claggy from November to March. Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit sits three hundred metres from the car park and is a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve that bans dogs outright, so keep to the trail itself.

Market Weighton to Goodmanham on the Yorkshire Wolds Way

YO43 3AJ
4.6 MI · 2H 20M · 85% OFF-ROAD

The Yorkshire Wolds Way leaves Market Weighton beside the old station and climbs gently north-east to Goodmanham, the village where Coifi the pagan priest is said to have thrown his spear into his own temple in 627. The route passes All Hallows church and the Goodmanham Arms, then swings up into Goodmanham Dale, a proper chalk valley with the trail running along the floor of it, before turning back over the wold and dropping down field edges to the town. It is arable country, so the paths are cross-field and headland tracks that get heavy after ploughing, and there is stock in some of the dale pastures. Rifle Butts Quarry, the little Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve above Goodmanham, does not allow dogs at all, so keep to the waymarked trail.
