A former Co-op on Agnes Road converted into a proper multi-room pub, with three separate rooms on the ground floor and a function room above, so there is usually a quiet corner even when the front is busy. A single L-shaped room in the Glass Works development on the edge of Barnsley's new town square, taken over by Nailmaker Brewery in late 2024. Hard floors, bare brick on two walls, bench seating and a rail of stools against the glass frontage looking out over the square. A big stone building opposite the bus station on Regent Street, originally Barnsley Court House railway station and later the town's first Wetherspoon, refurbished in late 2022. A genuinely tiny micropub on Redbrook Road at Gawber, converted from a flower shop, with a handful of tables and big windows onto the street. Barnsley's first micropub, in a former cake shop inside the Victorian Arcade off Church Street, and since 2019 the tap for Jolly Boys Brewery. It is one narrow indoor room under the arcade roof, so it is dry and out of the weather but there is no garden and very little floor space beside the tables. Handy if you are crossing town between the Glass Works and the market rather than as a walk finish. A hidden free house on Canal Street just off the A61 at Old Mill, themed round the filled-in Barnsley Canal it stands beside and hung with Oakwell Brewery memorabilia. It is a working local with pool and darts teams, its own car park and a garden, and it sits within a few minutes of the canal line footpath towards Monk Bretton Priory. New licensees restored the cask ale and refitted the kitchen in late 2025. A pub on Dearne Hall Road at Low Barugh, on the River Dearne west of Barnsley and beside the Barnsley to Penistone railway. The riverside footpaths at Barugh Green and the old canal line towards Wilthorpe start within a few hundred yards, though the Wilthorpe Marsh reserve itself takes no dogs at all.

A busy community local on Pogmoor Road, named after the Barnsley dialect writer, with one small bar but a layout that still gives the feel of separate rooms rather than one hall.
