Dog-friendly Ganton

A former coaching inn on Main Road, the old A64 line through Ganton, with a bar, a lounge and a large beer garden behind, plus free parking on site. The inn publishes a clear dog policy in its booking terms: dogs in the bedroom, the beer garden, the bar and the lounge, but not the restaurant, and never left alone in a room. Several bedrooms are listed on the rooms page as a Dog Free Zone, so the dog rooms are a specific set and worth naming when you book. Ganton Golf Club is a few hundred yards west and the Yorkshire Wolds Way runs along the escarpment a mile and a half to the south, so this is a sensible base for the wold-top walking.

The Yorkshire Wolds Way passes through Ganton village, and this is the leg east from the Greyhound, climbing steadily from 44 metres in the village to about 160 metres on the wold edge above Staxton. It is field-edge footpath almost throughout, following the top of the escarpment with the Vale of Pickering, Wykeham and the North York Moors on your left the whole way. The turning point is where the trail reaches Staxton Bank on the B1249; the last mile is the steepest, so it is an easy walk to cut short if the dog has had enough. There is no water on the route once you leave the village.
