Our drawing of the route — the shape of the walk, not a navigation aid. Carry OS Explorer on the hill.
Helperthorpe has no field path of its own - no public footpath or bridleway is recorded leaving the village - so its walking is on lanes, and this is the best of them. North out of the village past St Peter's, then west along Green Lane, an unclassified road that runs the length of the valley side above the Great Wold Valley with barely a car on it. Turn where you like and come back the same way; two miles round is the version described here. Helperthorpe carries one of the nine Great Wold Valley Heritage Trail interpretation boards, and this is the stretch where the Gypsey Race runs underground and the valley bottom stays dry.
