Dog-friendly Sheringham

Sheringham's High Street pub, a few steps from the promenade, with local ales, crab and lobster on the menu and a beer garden behind. It describes itself as very dog friendly, whether you are out for a walk or staying the week, and dogs are welcome in the garden too. There are seven letting rooms of various sizes.

Three miles, an hour and a half, with one genuinely steep pull up Beeston Bump, the glacial hill that rises straight out of the promenade at the east end of town and gives a two-county view from the top. It starts at the Cromer Road car park in Sheringham and follows the promenade east before climbing the Bump and returning through Beeston Regis on the field path behind the caravan site. Dogs are fine off lead on the grassy summit but the seaward face is an unfenced sixty-metre drop, cattle sometimes graze the Beeston Regis fields, and the council's no-dog area on the main beach runs from 1 May to 30 September, with leads required on the promenade in the same window.

Four and a half miles and around two and a quarter hours through Repton's parkland and the rhododendron woods, up the iron gazebo tower for the best view in Norfolk and out to the clifftop above Weybourne before looping back. It starts at the National Trust visitor centre car park off the A148, pay and display at £6.50 for non-members and free to members, with around 200 spaces that fill on rhododendron weekends in late May. Dogs must be on a lead throughout the park between 1 March and 31 July; outside those months they may run off lead under close control in the areas marked on the visitor centre map, and the clifftop edge here is unfenced and crumbling.

Five miles there and back, two and a half hours, on the Norfolk Coast Path along the highest cliffs in the county, with the North Norfolk Railway puffing along the ridge inland and Weybourne Hope's shingle at the far end. Start from the Station Road pay-and-display car park in the middle of Sheringham, two minutes from the seafront and the steam railway; the heritage line will bring you back from Weybourne station in season, which turns it into a linear walk. The clifftop path is unfenced with sheer drops in places and there is no way down for most of the route, so a lead is sensible the whole way, and the council bans dogs from the main Sheringham beach and requires leads on the promenade from 1 May to 30 September.

The Poppy Line, five and a quarter miles of steam railway from Sheringham through Weybourne to Holt, running along the cliff top and over the heath. Dogs travel on daily services for a small fee and are genuinely welcome, provided they are on a short lead at stations and stay off the seats and tables. A ride out and a walk back along the coast path is the classic way to use it.
