Dog-friendly Catterick Garrison

A large Hungry Horse family pub inside Princes Gate Shopping Park on Richmond Road, in the middle of the garrison. Greene King's facility list for the pub includes Dog Friendly alongside the beer garden, car park and disabled facilities, with no area excluded, which makes it the easiest place in Catterick Garrison to get a dog indoors and fed at the same time. It opens at nine in the morning for breakfast and serves food until nine at night, and the car park is free and large, which matters here because the town centre parking fills at school run and lunchtime.

A hundred acres of moorland, ancient woodland, willow carr and open water on the western edge of Catterick Garrison, the first Ministry of Defence nature reserve in the country. Dogs are allowed on the reserve and inside the Field Centre, but the reserve is explicit that they must be on a lead and under close control at all times, and the visitor rules add that the lead should be a short one and that you should stay on the paths. The Explorer Trail is the full green-marked circuit at four kilometres, taking in Risedale Beck through four-hundred-year-old woodland, the lake hide and Spigot Mere; the yellow Discovery Trail at 2.2km and the red Easy Access Trail at 1.1km are shorter options from the same car park. Photographic identification is no longer needed because the reserve is not reached through the barracks any more.
