Just under seven miles and about three and three quarter hours, out of Richmond by Hurgill Road and Whitcliffe Wood to the top of the scar, where three stones mark the spot a horse went over the edge in 1606 and its rider survived; the woodland track is firm and the scar-top pasture is soft going. Start from the roadside parking at Aislabeck Plantation on Hurgill Road, or walk up from Richmond market place and add a mile each way. This is a walk to keep a dog firmly on the lead for, and not only because the pasture is grazed - the scar drops two hundred feet sheer for most of a mile with no fence between path and edge at any point; there is water in the wood but none along the top, and the field crossings are a mixture of gates and stone stiles, two of which are narrow enough to stop a big dog.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - grazed pasture along the whole scar top, and a two-hundred-foot unfenced cliff edge for the best part of a mile.
