Seven miles and around four hours on the Coast to Coast line west from Richmond beneath Applegarth Scar to the estate village of Marske, coming back by the meadows and woods beside the Swale; it is a walk of two halves, high and dry on the way out, low and muddy on the way home. Start from Richmond market place, where parking is pay-and-display and the buses to Darlington and Reeth pull in; there is nothing at Marske but a phone box, so carry lunch. The Swale on the return leg is shallow and gravelly with several good swimming spots and Marske Beck gives a drink at the halfway point, but sheep are on the Applegarth pastures and cattle in the river meadows so the lead stays on, the scar edge above the path is unfenced, and the field walls carry a run of narrow stone stiles that a broad dog will not get through unaided.
