Dog-friendly Hornsea

A micropub in a converted shop unit at 140 Newbegin, at the Trans Pennine Trail end of Hornsea rather than the seafront end, opened in the summer of 2024 with an unapologetic 1970s look. Four rotating real ales are kept alongside Snails Bank real cider and craft beer, lunches are served, there is a front seating area outside and CAMRA members get twenty pence off a pint. Parking is across the road, free for three hours on weekdays and unrestricted at weekends. It is a small room, so a big dog will be part of the furniture. Dogs are welcome with no area restriction recorded, on CAMRA branch evidence from a survey dated 1 February 2025 rather than the bar’s own words.

A town pub on Market Place in the middle of Hornsea, about ten minutes' walk back from the promenade. The pub's own site says it welcomes well-behaved dogs into the whole pub, and that it keeps a range of doggy goodies including water bowls and treats, so there is no bar-only rule to work around. Inside it is a straightforward drinking pub with cask ales, a pool table, a dartboard and a fireplace, and there is a beer garden and a car park behind. It is open from 11am seven days and there is no kitchen listed, so treat it as a drink and a sit down after the beach rather than a meal.

The Marine sits right on Marine Drive above Hornsea beach, a very large two-roomed Greene King pub with sea views from the windows and a garden with a children’s play area behind. Three cask beers are usually on, Abbot and Landlord among them, and the kitchen runs from breakfast at half nine right through to nine at night, which makes it the obvious refuel after a morning on the sand. There is a quiz on Thursday, karaoke on Friday, step-free access to the toilets and motorhome parking if you ring ahead. Dogs are allowed in the bar only and not in the dining side, and that comes from a CAMRA survey of 13 June 2026 rather than from the pub itself.

A big refurbished town-centre pub on Market Place in Hornsea, five minutes back from the promenade, with a separate games area, a restaurant that can be booked privately, an enclosed beer garden and ample parking at the rear. It also lets five en-suite bedrooms on the first floor, though no rule is published either way about dogs staying in them, so ring first if you want to stay. Food runs half eleven to three and half five to nine every day and there are two changing cask beers on. Dogs are welcome in the bar area only, not the restaurant, and that is CAMRA branch evidence from a survey of the pub on 23 June 2025 rather than the pub’s own words.

The northern escape from Hornsea’s summer dog ban. The council order covers only the sand between the concrete ramp at Headland View and the steps south of Sands Lane, so if you drop down at the Headland View ramp and turn north you are outside it from the first stride, all year, with no lead requirement. You pass the last of the sea defences, then the boulder clay cliff takes over and rises steadily, with the caravan parks of Longbeach and Atwick set well back on top and field boundaries ending in mid-air where the land has gone. Two miles on, the clay ramp at the end of Cliff Lane brings you up into Atwick. It needs a falling tide because at high water the sea meets the clay in places, and you should keep well out from the cliff foot, which slumps without warning after rain.

This is the walk that lets you avoid Hornsea's summer dog ban entirely. The council's dog Public Spaces Protection Order only covers the sand between the concrete ramp at Headland View and the steps south of Sands Lane, so if you drop onto the beach at the Sands Lane steps and turn south you are outside the order from the first stride, on any date, with no lead requirement. The sand runs past the last of the Hornsea Burton bungalows and then out under two and a half miles of raw boulder clay cliff to the two great rock groynes that hold Mappleton up. It needs a falling tide: at high water the sea reaches the clay in several places and there is no way up. Coastal erosion here is measured in metres a year, so keep out from the foot of the cliff, where fresh slumps of clay and fence posts come down without notice.

The Hornsea Rail Trail is the old Hull and Hornsea railway, now the eastern end of the Trans Pennine Trail, and it starts a few yards behind the arched frontage of Hornsea Town station on Railway Street. Heading inland it drops through the cutting to the site of Hornsea Bridge station, crosses the Stream Dike and then runs dead straight across the Holderness plain in a green corridor of hawthorn and blackthorn, with the water of Hornsea Mere showing away to the right. It is level, wide and traffic free the whole way, which makes it the reliable wet-weather option when the clifftops are running with mud, and it is shared with cyclists and horse riders. The Trans Pennine Trail's own user code asks that dogs are kept under close control and in sight, that a short lead is used on busy sections and near farm animals and horses, and that you clear up. Sigglesthorne station, oddly, sits at Great Hatfield rather than Sigglesthorne, and the Wrygarth Inn is a short walk from the old platform.

Two self-catering cottages in Hornsea, Grosvenor Cottage sleeping four and Lobster Pot sleeping up to six, both a couple of minutes' walk from the beach, the town and the start of the Trans Pennine Trail. The owners state on their own doggy visitors page that there are no dog restrictions, rules or charges, and that both cottages take more than one dog depending on how many people are staying. Bowls, treats, throws, towels and poo bags are left out, a crate and baby gates are there if you want them, and a dog buggy can be borrowed on request. Both gardens are properly secure rather than nominally so: Grosvenor has six foot fences, walls and a mesh-backed hedge with two gates, and Lobster Pot has six foot walls and a digital lock on the gate that opens onto the trail.

The old Hornsea Freeport on Rolston Road, now trading as Hornsea Village, is an outdoor outlet shopping village of low brick units around lawns and lakes on the southern edge of the town. Its own visitor page says it is a dog friendly shopping centre, that some stores allow dogs inside, and that there are water bowls around the village and plenty of seating, so the honest position is that the open ground is yours and each shop decides for itself at its own door. Parking is free in two large public car parks with allocated disabled bays. Opening is ten to half five Monday to Friday, half nine to half five on Saturday and eleven to five on Sunday. Cycling is not permitted around the village, which keeps the paths calm for a dog on a lead.

Wassand sits on the north shore of Hornsea Mere between Seaton and Hornsea, and the estate has held the Mere and this land since the sixteenth century. Its own facilities page states the position in three words, dogs welcome on leads, and there is usually a bowl of water put out beside the conservatory. Tickets buy you the walled garden, the woodland walks, the half-mile park walk with the Mere spread out below, the ground floor of the Regency hall and the tea room in the conservatory, which serves homemade cakes on Open Days and self-service refreshments on Garden Days. Parking is free and there is plenty of it, there are toilets including an accessible one and a picnic area, and a walks map is published on the estate website. It only opens on selected days through the summer, so check the calendar before driving out.
