A flat 5.6-mile circular of a little over two hours with barely 20 metres of climbing, following Scalby Beck and then the Sea Cut, the Georgian flood channel dug to take the Derwent's water east to the sea, out to Mowthorpe Bridge and back along the opposite bank. Start in Scalby village near the church, where there is on-street parking and the 3 and 12 buses from Scarborough come through. Level, sheltered and full of water for a dog to swim in, with long off-lead stretches between gates, although the riverside fields are grazed and the beck runs high and fast after heavy rain on the moors above.

A 7.4-mile moderate loop of about three and a quarter hours that follows Scalby Beck upstream into the woods above Throxenby Mere and comes back over the fields, with 150 metres of climbing and riverside ground that turns to deep mud between November and March. Start in Scalby village by St Laurence church, where there is free roadside parking on Church Becks Lane and the number 3 and 128 buses stop on the main street. The beck gives water for most of the way and the woodland stretch is fine for off-lead running, but there are cattle and sheep in the fields on the return leg and a mile of village road at either end.

Three flat miles out along the bank of the Sea Cut and the same back, roughly three leisurely hours, on a grassy engineered levee with barely 60 metres of rise and no stiles, though the last mile towards Mowthorpe holds water after rain. Start from the bridge on Carr Lane at the western edge of Scalby, with free roadside parking near the Nag's Head and the number 128 bus from Scarborough stopping in the village. The cut was dug in 1804 to take Derwent floodwater to the sea and it is slow, clean and swimmable the whole way, with kingfishers and no cliffs, but the bank fields are grazed and the odd stretch is fenced tight against the water.
