The South Yorkshire end of the Cuckoo Way, the towpath of the Chesterfield Canal, walked east from the Canal and River Trust car park just south of Kiveton Park. Dog Kennel Bridge is the first bridge and Kiveton Park station is a few yards from it, so this is an easy one to reach by train from Sheffield or Worksop. East of the bridge the canal drops through a long flight of locks towards Turnerwood and Thorpe Salvin, with information boards on the stone that went from these quarries to build the Houses of Parliament. It is flat, well surfaced and sheltered, which makes it the wet-weather option for anyone based around Dinnington.

THE SMALL PRINTThe Canal and River Trust's Towpath Code is the landowner's rule here: "Keep dogs under close control and clean up after them", along with "Pedestrians have priority", "Cyclists must slow down for others" and "Take extra care when passing people, pets and wildlife". Locks, lock gates and unfenced canal edge are the real risk, not the rules. Rotherham Council's only dog order is the borough-wide Dog Fouling Public Spaces Protection Order in operation from 29 January 2025 for three years, fixed penalty up to £100 or a fine up to £1,000 on conviction; there is no lead order and no exclusion order in Rotherham.
