A nineteenth-century coaching inn on the hill above Boroughbridge, just off the A1, which once held the village lock-up and now keeps three en-suite rooms and a Tuesday quiz. Dogs are taken in the bar area and the garden rather than the dining room, so head left as you come in. Food runs Sunday lunchtimes and Friday and Saturday evenings.

ADD A PLACEA short flat loop of two and three quarter miles, barely an hour, dropping off the ridge from Kirby Hill down field paths and lanes to the 1322 battle site on the northern edge of Boroughbridge and back, with 10 metres of climbing and no stiles worth the name. Start at All Saints church in Kirby Hill where there is roadside parking by the green; Boroughbridge and its buses and cafes lie a mile down the hill if you want to extend it. Arable and grazing land either side means leads for most of the route, and the last stretch uses a lane with occasional traffic, but it is level, quick-drying and a sensible winter option for a dog that no longer wants hills.
