Four miles down both banks of the Nidd below the town, an hour and three quarters, largely level riverside path with a short flight of steps at Waterside and a stretch of woodland that gets slippery when wet. Start from the pay-and-display car park at Conyngham Hall, which is signed off the A59 and never quite fills, and Knaresborough station is a ten-minute walk away on the Leeds to York line. Dogs can run the whole riverside once you are past the Waterside cafes, the Nidd here is deep and slow with easy shelving entries for a swimmer, and there is no livestock; the far bank below Grimbald Bridge floods after heavy rain, in which case turn it into an out-and-back rather than wading.

Follow the Nidd upstream from Knaresborough's Waterside, beneath the great railway viaduct, into 114 acres of Woodland Trust ancient woodland in a steep-sided gorge. Two miles each way of fully surfaced, traffic-free path along the Nidd from High Bridge in Knaresborough out to Bilton Hall Drive, resurfaced in 2013 and effectively flat, which makes it one of the few routes in the district that stays clean and firm right through winter. Start at High Bridge on the Ripon Road below the town, five minutes from Knaresborough station, and at the far end it links straight into Bilton Lane and the Nidderdale Greenway for a longer day. Named after the Yorkshire cycling champion, it is shared with bikes and horses and passes fields of grazing horses and a couple of cattle grids, so keep dogs on the lead and close in; the surface is kind on old joints and takes a buggy or wheelchair without complaint.

Seven and a half miles through the parkland and estate woods of the lower Nidd valley, close to four hours, easy underfoot apart from a short scramble along the wooded gorge on the return and a run of stiles that a heavy dog will need lifting over. It starts at the Bay Horse in Goldsborough, three miles from Knaresborough, with roadside parking on the village street and a bus from Knaresborough on weekdays; the waymarking is good except between Little Ribston and Loxley, where a map earns its keep. Estate parkland means sheep almost throughout and a lead for most of the route, but the Nidd is crossed twice and there are safe shallow entries for a swim near Ribston Hall; the riverside sections drain reasonably but the parkland turns heavy after Christmas.

Eight miles of the northern arc of the waymarked Knaresborough Round through three quiet estate villages, three and a half hours, almost all of it flat field path and green lane with a scattering of stiles and one long farm track. Start at the Chain Lane car park in Knaresborough and walk out past Scriven; the number 1 bus from Harrogate stops in the town centre, and there is a pub at Ferrensby roughly halfway if you want a break. This is proper working farmland, with sheep the year round and cattle on the Farnham fields in summer, so it is a lead-on walk for most of its length; there is no open water to speak of, and the clay field paths hold water badly, making this a summer and early autumn route rather than a January one.

England's oldest visitor attraction, open since 1630: the prophetess's cave and the eerie Petrifying Well, reached by a riverside beech avenue with postcard views of Knaresborough viaduct. Two and a half easy miles combining the community-owned meadows of Long Lands Common with a stretch of the surfaced Nidderdale Greenway, an hour and a quarter with no stiles, no gradient and no reason to turn back in bad weather. The start is the Greenway entrance off Bilton Lane in north Harrogate, roadside parking only and no charge, and the Greenway runs all the way to Ripley if you want to make a longer day of it. The Common is thirty acres of young woodland and rough grass bought by local people in 2021 and dogs are welcome off lead across it, though there are no ponds or becks so carry water in summer; the Greenway half is hard-surfaced and shared with cyclists, so a lead is sensible on that section.

Three and a half miles of woodland and old railway on the north edge of Harrogate, about an hour and three quarters, with one steep set of steps down into the beck valley and a steady climb back out. Start from the Nidderdale Greenway access off Bilton Lane, where there is free roadside parking and the number 2A bus reaches Bilton from the town centre; the Greenway itself is tarmac and stays clean in any weather, which is the point of it. Dogs are off lead all the way through the Woodland Trust ground at Bilton Beck and Rudding Bottoms, there is no livestock, and the beck runs clear enough to drink from all year, though the woodland floor turns to deep mud between November and March while the viaduct crossing stays firm underfoot.

Five miles and a little over two hours on field paths, woodland and farm tracks between the two villages, with only 70 metres of climbing but several stiles and heavy going across the clay in a wet winter. Start from the village centre in Follifoot where there is roadside parking near the Radcliffe Arms; the 7 bus from Harrogate serves both Follifoot and Spofforth if you would rather make it a linear walk. The ruined English Heritage keep at Spofforth is free to wander and dogs are welcome in the grounds on a lead, but almost the whole route crosses grazed arable and pasture, so leads stay on and there is little open water beyond the Crimple.

Four and a bit miles round the shallow bowl of the Crimple valley on the southern edge of town, roughly two hours at dog pace, with one gentle pull back up out of the valley and nothing else you would call a hill. It starts from the car park on Hookstone Wood Road and crosses the old golf course to pass under the thirty-one arches of the 1848 viaduct; Hornbeam Park station is five minutes away and has trains from York and Leeds, which makes this one of the few Harrogate walks you can do without a car. The field sections turn to proper clay mud from November onwards while the Hookstone Wood paths stay walkable all winter, sheep graze the valley fields so leads on there, and Crimple Beck gives a dog a drink but is too shallow for a swim.
