Dog-friendly Great Ayton and around

A 1742 coaching inn on West Terrace facing Low Green, with outside tables a few steps from the River Leven where it runs through the middle of the village. The pub side is dog friendly, but the bedrooms are not: the inn states plainly that pets are not allowed in the hotel rooms and points dog owners at its sister pub, the Royal Oak on High Green. That makes it a good stop mid-walk and the wrong choice to stay in with a dog.

A 17th-century former coaching inn on Great Ayton's High Street, all original beams and log fires, in the village where the young Captain Cook grew up. Dogs are welcome in the Bistro Bar (mention your dog when booking a table) and in the bedrooms. An obvious pairing with Roseberry Topping or the Captain Cook's Monument walk.

A working-farm coffee shop at Little Ayton, signposted off Great Ayton high street, serving breakfasts, sandwiches, home baking and Sunday lunch until half past three. Its own site says dogs are most welcome both inside and outside the coffee shop, which is unusually plain wording for a food business, and there is a decked balcony and tables by the stream as well as the indoor room with its log burner. Free parking in the main and overflow car parks means it works as the start or end of a walk rather than somewhere you have to leave the dog in the car.

An Inn Collection Group inn on the green at Newton under Roseberry, a mile and a half north of Great Ayton and directly under Roseberry Topping, which makes it the obvious base for the climb. There are twelve en-suite bedrooms, and the designated dog-friendly rooms take up to two dogs at £15 per dog per night. The National Park car park and the path onto the hill are a few hundred yards along the A173, so the dog can be walked before check-in without moving the car.

A self-catering farm cottage at Pinchinthorpe between Great Ayton and Guisborough, on the edge of the National Park boundary. The owners state that families and their well behaved pets are very welcome, without naming a charge or a limit. It sits within a few minutes' walk of the Guisborough Forest and Walkway visitor centre, which puts three waymarked forest loops and the old railway walkway on the doorstep.

A High Street pub in Stokesley, a few doors along from the market square and a short walk from the River Leven path. Its own site states that dogs are welcome in both the pub and the beer garden, with no condition beyond being well behaved, so a muddy dog off the Cleveland Hills does not have to be tied up outside. The garden is at the back, out of the wind that funnels down the High Street.

A gastropub at Springfield on the edge of Stokesley, serving food from noon until late seven days a week, with a large outdoor area including the main beer garden. The pub bills itself as dog friendly on its own site and keeps a dog-friendly area indoors, but it does not publish which rooms that covers, so ask before you settle in the restaurant half. Parking on site, which makes it a workable finish to the River Leven walk.

A village hotel on Great Broughton High Street, two miles from Clay Bank and the Wainstones themselves. Dedicated dog-friendly rooms have easy outdoor access and wipe-clean surfaces, and every dog gets a welcome pack of treats, blanket and bowls.

A small tap room and micro-pub in the middle of Stokesley, all cask and craft and no fruit machines. Well behaved dogs are welcomed indoors as well as in the beer garden, and the owners say so in as many words on their own FAQ.

An 18th-century real-ale institution at the west end of Stokesley's handsome market town, home of the Captain Cook Brewery which brews just behind the pub, and a Good Beer Guide fixture for over 30 consecutive years. Dogs are welcome, and a huge jar of gravy-bone biscuits sits on the bar. A sheltered outdoor drinking area overlooks the brewery.

An estate pub on The Avenue at Hutton Meadows, on the south side of Guisborough and within walking distance of the lanes running up towards Hutton Village and the forest. The pub publishes its own dog page and welcomes dogs in the bar area, with water bowls and treats kept behind the bar. There is no published policy for the restaurant side, so ask at the door if you want to eat with the dog rather than drink.
