A flat 3.7-mile riverside stroll with barely 10 metres of ascent, an hour and a half, on mown grass paths and field edges beside the River Leven, finishing over the seventeenth-century packhorse bridge in the town. Start from Stokesley market place, which has free short-stay parking and frequent buses from Middlesbrough and Great Ayton. The Leven is shallow and easy to get in and out of the whole way, there are bins and benches along the town stretch, and dogs can be off the lead on the riverside greens, though the outer field section is sometimes grazed.
A small tap room and micro-pub in the middle of Stokesley, all cask and craft and no fruit machines. Well behaved dogs are welcomed indoors as well as in the beer garden, and the owners say so in as many words on their own FAQ.
An 18th-century real-ale institution at the west end of Stokesley's handsome market town, home of the Captain Cook Brewery which brews just behind the pub, and a Good Beer Guide fixture for over 30 consecutive years. Dogs are welcome, and a huge jar of gravy-bone biscuits sits on the bar. A sheltered outdoor drinking area overlooks the brewery.
