Dog-friendly Sewerby

A traditional stone pub on Cliff Road in Sewerby village, next door to the gates of Sewerby Hall and looking out over Bridlington Bay to Flamborough Head. Its own about page states plainly that the pub is dog friendly, and describes a large beer garden with a children's play area running towards the clifftop, with ample car parking of its own. The kitchen does pub grub with a twist, homemade pies and locally caught fish, and it makes a good deal of its Sunday carvery. It sits directly on the clifftop path, so it is the natural halfway point of the Sewerby to Danes Dyke walk, and the sand below at Sewerby steps is well outside the Bridlington North Beach exclusion. Food runs noon to eight Monday to Saturday and noon to five on Sunday.

The main cafe in the old stable block at Sewerby Hall, off the courtyard beside the gift shop and a minute from the clifftop gate. Sewerby own frequently asked questions say that only assistance dogs are allowed in the zoo, the house, the adventure playground, the Stables Gift Shop, the Orangery and the Clock Tower Cafe, but then add that there is a section in the cafe where all dogs are permitted, so ask for that side when you go in. Everywhere else in the fifty acres of grounds a dog is fine on a lead, and you must clean up after it. The Orangery, the smarter restaurant in the walled garden, is assistance dogs only with no dog section. The car park is free to visitors and there is a discount on admission if you show a valid parking ticket.

An easy two-mile round on the council's Healthy Walks list, out of the Sewerby Hall car park on Church Lane, past the Ship Inn and down the footpath to the clifftop, then east above Sewerby Rocks and Ragstone Hole with Bridlington Bay open on your right. At the trees near Danes' Dyke Farm the route turns inland along the field edge and comes back through Sewerby past the Anglo-Saxon burial ground. The cliff here is unfenced grass, low but sheer, and the path runs close to the edge for most of the seaward leg. No dog order covers any of it, and the beach below at Sewerby steps is well north of the Bridlington North Beach exclusion zone, so a dog is free all year. There is a section of road walking and one busy crossing on Church Lane.

The Club's touring site on Flamborough Road at Marton, between Sewerby and Flamborough, set back from the cliffs with Danes Dyke woods and the clifftop path within easy reach. The Club's own site page lists a dog walk on site, a dog walk from the site and a dog washing area, and names dogs among the things the site is ideal for, which is about as explicit as the Club gets. Sewerby Hall is two miles south, Bempton Cliffs four miles north, and the sand below Sewerby is well clear of the Bridlington North Beach summer exclusion. There is no hire accommodation here, so the dog comes in your own van or tent. The Club does not publish a dog charge for this site.

A modernised four-berth cottage on Finley Court in Sewerby village, more or less opposite the gates of Sewerby Hall and two minutes from the clifftop path. The owners' own site describes it as pet friendly and says dog bowls are provided for furry friends, and there is a fully enclosed sunny garden to let a dog out into without a lead. The Ship Inn is at the end of the road and takes dogs, and the sand at Sewerby steps sits well north of the Bridlington North Beach exclusion so it is open all year. Danes Dyke woods are a mile east along the cliff. Parking is off-road at the property.

Fifty acres of walled gardens, monkey puzzle avenues and clifftop parkland above Bridlington Bay, with the Georgian hall at the centre and the sea on three sides of the estate. The hall's own FAQ says well-behaved dogs must remain on leads at all times and that you must clean up after them, and that only assistance dogs are allowed in the zoo, the house, the children's adventure playground, the Stables Gift Shop, the Orangery and the Clock Tower Cafe. There is, though, one section of the cafe where all dogs are permitted, which is the useful detail most people miss. The onsite car park is free to visitors, with overflow on Sewerby Road at peak times and a discount on admission if you hold a valid parking ticket. From the garden gate you can pick up the clifftop path straight down to Bridlington North Beach.
