Haltwhistle · 3 checked & stamped
Boots on. These are the Haltwhistle walks worth the drive, with lead rules and livestock warnings marked.
Three and three quarter miles in about an hour and a half over rolling country with a fine stretch of Wall, east to Caw Gap and back by Great Chesters fort. Start at the Cawfields Quarry car park north of Haltwhistle, a National Park pay-and-display with picnic tables beside the flooded quarry, which is the easiest parking anywhere on this section. The quarry lake is fenced with steep sides and deep water so dogs are better kept out of it, the Wall pasture is grazed by sheep with several ladder stiles, and the Haltwhistle Burn provides the only drinkable water.
Four and a half miles in a little over two hours up a wooded ravine of old industrial workings to Cawfields Quarry, returning on lanes and the old railway line. Start in Haltwhistle itself, where the station and Market Place car parks are both free for up to three hours and rarely full outside market day. The burn runs alongside for the first mile and a half, so there is water and shade the whole climb and stretches where a dog can be off the lead, but the upper fields are grazed and the last section joins a quiet road.
Four miles in two to three hours with some sharp short climbs, along the switchback of Walltown Crags and down the Pennine Way to the ruin of Thirlwall Castle above the Tipalt Burn. Start from the Roman Army Museum car park at Carvoran, free for museum visitors and charged otherwise, with Walltown Quarry country park a few hundred yards on as a free alternative. Walltown Quarry has a mown lawn and a pond where a dog can run, but the crag section is grazed by sheep with an unfenced drop on the north face, and Thirlwall itself is a fenced consolidated ruin.
