Three and three quarter miles in about an hour and a half over rolling country with a fine stretch of Wall, east to Caw Gap and back by Great Chesters fort. Start at the Cawfields Quarry car park north of Haltwhistle, a National Park pay-and-display with picnic tables beside the flooded quarry, which is the easiest parking anywhere on this section. The quarry lake is fenced with steep sides and deep water so dogs are better kept out of it, the Wall pasture is grazed by sheep with several ladder stiles, and the Haltwhistle Burn provides the only drinkable water.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads asked for on the Wall path and the grazed fields either side; the flooded quarry has steep unfenced sides and is not a safe swim.
