The coastal towns of Lyme Regis Beer and Seaton are both a ten-minute drive away and offer beautiful sandy beaches lots of family fun and an array of cafés shops and pubs to enjoy. Colmer s Hill is a delightful walk at The Symondsbury Estate and a great spot for lunch at the café. On entering this spacious and inviting farmhouse you will find yourself in the elegant and comfortable lounge which offers a SmartTV and DVD and a large traditional inglenook fireplace with wood burner for you to snuggle in front of. Across the hallway is the charming and attractive dining room complete with feature fireplace and original stone wall. Moving into the kitchen/breakfast room you will find everything you may need including oven with hob and extractor hood fridge/freezer dishwasher and washing machine. Monmouth Beach

Lyme Regis

Long shingle and pebble beach running west from the Cobb towards the Undercliff, backed by beach huts and the ammonite pavement at low tide. Dorset Council lists it as open to dogs all year with no seasonal exclusion. Steeply shelving in places, so it suits a walk more than a swim.

A 3.6-mile loop out of Lyme over Ware Cliffs to the edge of the Undercliff, back along Marine Parade and the Cobb: an hour and three quarters of grassy field paths, a set of steep steps below Underhill Farm and a mile of hard promenade. Start from Holmbush car park on Pound Street, pay and display and the largest in town, which still fills by mid-morning in August. Leads are compulsory the whole seafront stretch under the town PSPO, the Ware Cliffs fields are usually grazed, and dogs are banned outright from Front Beach between 1 May and 30 September, so the sea swim has to wait for Monmouth Beach shingle.

Handsome 1735 house in gardens above the Cobb, the smartest address in Lyme and the best lawn to eat lunch on. Dogs are welcome in the gardens, the bar and the sitting room, but the hotel no longer takes them in any of the bedrooms, so this is a lunch stop rather than a dog-friendly stay. Worth knowing before you book.

Rebuilt seaside pub a few steps up from Lyme's Cobb Gate, doing shellfish and Dorset beer under a nautical roof. Dogs are taken in the front pub and everywhere outside, but not in the rear restaurant, so ring ahead if you want a table with the dog rather than a spot in the bar. Rooms upstairs are let as a boutique stay.

St Austell's inn on the seafront at the bottom of Broad Street, with bedrooms over the bay. Dogs are allowed in every part of the inn except the main restaurant, and a set number of bedrooms are dog-friendly at £20 per dog per stay. Monmouth Beach to the west and Church Cliff Beach to the east are open all year, and both are a two-minute walk away.

Dorset Council places no restrictions at all on East Beach, while West Beach is open to dogs from 1 October to 30 April only. Get the side right and you can walk a dog here in August.
