Three miles there and back along the towpath of the oldest ship canal in the country, an hour and a quarter of completely level walking on a wide surfaced path from the warehouses on Exeter Quay to the lock keeper's house at Double Locks. Start at the Quay itself, ten minutes downhill from the High Street with paid parking on Haven Road and a free bike and boat ferry crossing the basin in season; the towpath is traffic free the whole way and shared with cyclists. It is the reliable all-weather city walk for a dog, flat and firm with grass verges to sniff and the canal to drink from, but the water is deep and steep-sided with few easy exits, the towpath is busy with bikes at commuting times, and there is no livestock or stile anywhere on it.

Four miles of waymarked forest road and woodland track on the Haldon ridge above Exeter, about two hours with 140 metres of climbing and firm going in all weathers, with the Exe estuary and Dartmoor both in view from the open felled areas. Start at the main visitor car park signed off the A38 at Exeter Racecourse, where parking is charged by the hour or by annual permit, with a café, toilets and dog waste bins along the trails; buses 39 and X38 stop a mile away at the racecourse. Dogs are genuinely well served here with wide firm tracks for off-lead running and no livestock at all, but there is no natural water on the ridge, mountain bikers use crossing trails at speed, and forestry operations close individual routes at short notice, so read the boards at the car park.

The owners are happy for you to visit the farm animals to witness or help with the seasonal workings of their dairy farm. The historic Regency seaside town of Sidmouth is only 2.5 miles away and provides a lovely walk from the farm down to the Byes in the town. It s popular with families and couples with clean beaches and is well known for it s Folk festival and the towns Regatta in late summer as well as the Walking Festival and an amazing Science Festival in the autumn. As you enter the farm cottage there s a porch for those welly boots and flipflops soggy dogs and beach towels. The kitchen is warm and welcoming with a wide range of kitchen utensils and appliances for cooking up some tasty meals. Should you prefer to stay in and cook than go out this kitchen has an electric oven and hob microwave fridge with icebox washing machine dishwasher and many useful extras. Through the kitchen is the light and airy lounge with a dining table to sit and plan your days adventures. A Smart TV and DVD for resting those weary legs after a fun filled day will keep the kids entertained. Up stairs there are two bedrooms - one double with hand basin and one bedroom with twin beds. The family bathroom has a shower over bath and WC. Outside the property is an enclosed garden to the rear with garden furniture for outdoor dining or relaxing and a BBQ. Shared use of a lawn area to the side of the property with a trampoline great for relaxing or playing games. An easy three miles of about an hour and a quarter, out along the Goat Walk above the Exe, round the sea wall to the RSPB viewing platform at Bowling Green Marsh and back through the Dutch-gabled streets of Topsham, all on roads and hard flat paths. Park in Holman Way in the middle of the town, which is paid and busy on market days, or take the branch line train from Exeter which stops five minutes from the start. Dogs need to be on the lead for most of this one: the Goat Walk is a narrow raised path with the tide on one side and gardens on the other, the marsh is a nationally important roost for waders and wildfowl where dogs must stay on the lane and out of the reserve, and the hides are not for dogs at all.

Three miles there and back along the last reach of the Exeter Ship Canal to the Turf Hotel at the mouth of the estuary, an hour and a quarter dead flat on a wide grass and gravel towpath with the Exminster Marshes on one side and the tide on the other. The catch is the crossing: the towpath is on the west bank, so from Topsham you take the seasonal ferry from the steps below the Passage House, and if it is not running you must drive round by Exminster and walk down the lane instead. Dogs have it easy here with no stiles, no traffic and no livestock on the towpath itself, but the marsh either side is grazed and full of overwintering birds, so keep to the path and on a lead in winter, and the canal is deep with sheer sides throughout.

Two and a half miles round the Killerton estate, an hour and a quarter on easy terrain with moderate slopes, out from the stable block across parkland and up through the beech and oak of Danes Wood on the old volcanic hill. Start at the main Killerton car park off the B3181 north of Exeter, free to members and charged with admission otherwise, with a café, toilets and a plant centre; it is signed from junction 28 or 29 of the M5 and holds hundreds of cars. Dogs are welcome on this parkland and woodland circuit and there is a stream at the bottom of the park, but sheep graze the open parkland so leads are needed there, dogs are restricted in the formal garden, and the woodland tracks are steep and slippery in leaf-fall.
