A long-established walkers and cyclists cafe in Staveley Mill Yard, with a sofa area downstairs and tables by the river Kent. Dogs are warmly welcomed inside and water is offered without asking; you can carry a pint over from the brewery yard next door.

ADD A PLACETwo and a quarter miles and just over an hour, a hundred metres of climb: straight up the little crag of Reston Scar behind the village for a surprising view into Kentmere, then down to the weir on the Kent by the old bobbin mill. Start at the free Staveley village car park by the Mill Yard, which holds around 50 cars and is a two-minute walk from the station on the Windermere branch line. Short, steep and satisfying, with a river at the end for a swim and the mill yard cafes putting bowls out for dogs; the scar itself is common grazing with sheep all year and the summit has small unfenced rock outcrops, so leads above the last gate.
