Reston Scar and the mill weir from Staveley

2.2 MI · 1H 4M · 84% OFF-ROAD

Two and a quarter miles and just over an hour, a hundred metres of climb: straight up the little crag of Reston Scar behind the village for a surprising view into Kentmere, then down to the weir on the Kent by the old bobbin mill. Start at the free Staveley village car park by the Mill Yard, which holds around 50 cars and is a two-minute walk from the station on the Windermere branch line. Short, steep and satisfying, with a river at the end for a swim and the mill yard cafes putting bowls out for dogs; the scar itself is common grazing with sheep all year and the summit has small unfenced rock outcrops, so leads above the last gate.

Staveley Nature Reserve

HG5 9LQ
3 MI · 1H 13M · 95% OFF-ROAD

A flat three-mile hour-and-a-quarter circuit of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's 79-hectare wetland reserve, built on old gravel workings, with barely 10 metres of height change and a network of surfaced paths that take a buggy or a wheelchair and stay usable in midwinter. The car park on Minskip Road takes a dozen cars, with disabled parking off Main Street through a radar-key gate by the church, and the reserve sits ten minutes from the A1(M) south-west of Boroughbridge. Highland cattle and Hebridean sheep graze here all year, so dogs must be on a lead on every path, and they are not allowed in the largest hide; the lagoons draw bitterns and marsh harriers, so keep the noise down.
