Parking

Windermere station car park and the Broad Street pay-and-display in the town; both charged. There is no parking at the fell gate, so this is best walked from the town or straight off the train.

The other hill out of Windermere town, quieter than Orrest Head because it faces away from the lake. From the station the lane climbs east past Lickbarrow, then field paths lead onto open ground and a small reedy tarn sits in a fold below the summit. The 232m top gives the whole length of Windermere one way and the Kentmere fells the other. The ground is grazed the whole way once you leave the tarmac, so this is a lead walk from the last gate onwards regardless of the season.

THE SMALL PRINTThe open ground is access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act. Government guidance for open access land is that "dogs must be kept under effective control at all times and on a short lead of no more than 2 metres at all times near livestock", and on non-coastal access land the short-lead rule near livestock applies between 1 March and 31 July each year. Herdwicks graze these fields all year, so treat the lead as required throughout. Landowners may exclude dogs from small lambing fields, so obey any notice at the gates. The access right does not cover professional dog walking. Separately, Schedule 3 of the Westmorland and Furness dogs order excludes dogs from the School Knott Estate play area in the town.
