The long quiet valley walk behind Troutbeck, up the bridleway along Hagg Gill under the Yoke ridge, round the head of the dale and back down the west side of the Tongue by the Trout Beck. The Tongue itself is the whaleback hill of 364m in the middle of the valley and can be added from the north end. Troutbeck Park is a working sheep farm and the whole route crosses grazed in-bye and fell, with lambs on the valley floor from March. The bridleway is wet underfoot for most of its length even in a dry spell.

THE SMALL PRINTThe fell above the intake walls is access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act. Government guidance for open access land is that "dogs must be kept under effective control at all times and on a short lead of no more than 2 metres at all times near livestock", with the short-lead rule near livestock applying between 1 March and 31 July on non-coastal access land. Troutbeck Park is a working sheep farm and the valley floor is in-bye grazing rather than access land, so on those sections you are on a bridleway through a working farm and a lead is required at all times. Landowners may exclude dogs from small lambing fields; obey the notices.
