The old Fish Inn in the middle of Buttermere village, between Buttermere and Crummock Water and at the start of the lake circuit, the Rannerdale ridge and the Scale Force path. The hotel lists dog friendly as one of its headline features, gives a reserved parking space with each room and will lay on a private breakfast at no charge, which is the practical fix for a hotel that does not want dogs in a full dining room. A three-bedroom cottage on Chapel Street in the village, sleeping six, a couple of minutes' walk from the Dog and Duck square and about a mile and a half from both North Landing and the lighthouse. The owners' own site says they accept two or three dogs free of charge, which is a rare thing to see written down and rarer still with no cleaning surcharge attached. There is a secure outdoor yard at the back, so a wet dog can be parked out of the kitchen after a day on the chalk. Everything on the headland is walkable or a five-minute drive: Thornwick, Selwicks Bay, South Landing and the whole Headland Way circuit, none of which carry a seasonal dog ban. Parking is on the street outside.

Fifty-eight timber cabins in a grassy clearing deep in Cropton Forest, north of Pickering, run by Forest Holidays on Forestry England land. Pet-friendly cabins take dogs (some up to four), and miles of forest tracks straight from the door mean proper off-lead exercise, though dogs cannot be left alone in the cabins. The dog-friendly New Inn at Cropton village is about a mile away.

A wooded, adults-only touring park on Gale Lane at Harome, a mile or so from Helmsley. Well behaved dogs are permitted and the park keeps a proper exercise area with a woodland walk and an open run.

A small touring site tucked between Elizabeth Dock and the marina on Marine Road, five minutes on foot from the town centre and a short walk from the shingle beach. The operator's own site describes it plainly as a dog friendly site. There are twenty-eight hard-standing pitches with electric hook-up and three camping pods, with an amenity block including a disabled and family wet room. It is the closest bed of any kind to the Maryport shore walks, and the promenade dog walk starts at the end of the road.

A Camping and Caravanning Club certificated site on Pear Tree Farm at Harton, a mile off the A64 between York and Malton. It takes caravans, motorhomes and tents on level grass and hardstanding pitches with sixteen amp hook-ups, and there is a small enclosed paddock that takes up to four units for people who want their children close by. The farm states that the nightly rate includes electricity, awnings, dogs and additional vehicles, so there is no dog supplement, and the site tells visitors to bring their dogs and let them explore the fields and track. It is a working farm with heated showers and toilets, a laundry, a games room and free wifi.

A ninety-year-old boatyard on the Thurne at Potter Heigham hiring cruisers, day boats and picnic boats, plus riverside cottages and apartments. Dog-friendly boats are a stated part of the fleet and there is a pet-friendly boating holiday option. The medieval bridge just downstream is the reason so many boats stop short here.

A licensed touring caravan park, campsite and event space on Kilnhurst Road, the B6090, at Hooton Roberts in the Don valley between Rotherham and Conisbrough, run in the old buildings of a farm lodge that was a country pub with dining until 2015. There is a bar with food at events, a function room, a garden and parking, and being a campsite it is open ground rather than corridors, which suits a dog that would rather sleep in a van than a hotel room. The Don valley footpaths and the Trans Pennine Trail towards Conisbrough Viaduct are the nearest walking. Opening hours depend on what event is on, so it is worth checking before turning up. CAMRA's WhatPub survey of March 2024 records the site as dog friendly; nothing published says whether dogs may sleep in any indoor accommodation.

Two self-catering cottages in Hornsea, Grosvenor Cottage sleeping four and Lobster Pot sleeping up to six, both a couple of minutes' walk from the beach, the town and the start of the Trans Pennine Trail. The owners state on their own doggy visitors page that there are no dog restrictions, rules or charges, and that both cottages take more than one dog depending on how many people are staying. Bowls, treats, throws, towels and poo bags are left out, a crate and baby gates are there if you want them, and a dog buggy can be borrowed on request. Both gardens are properly secure rather than nominally so: Grosvenor has six foot fences, walls and a mesh-backed hedge with two gates, and Lobster Pot has six foot walls and a digital lock on the gate that opens onto the trail.

A clifftop Victorian hotel at the top of the village with dedicated dog-friendly rooms in The Captain's Quarters, at £10 per dog per night. Dog bowls, a blanket and treats are laid out for your dog before you arrive, and the beach is a ten-minute amble down through the village.

Boutique hotel in a 19th-century mansion at 89 The Mount, on the walking line between the racecourse and Micklegate Bar. It accepts dogs under the brand's dog-friendly scheme — check the nightly fee and which rooms when booking. Well placed for an evening loop of the Knavesmire before dinner in the bistro courtyard.

Three hundred acres of heath and woodland above Weybourne, with its own halt on the North Norfolk Railway and miles of waymarked trails through the gorse. Designated dog-friendly Classic and Platinum lodges take dogs, and there is a dog wash on the park. Weybourne beach, which has no dog order, is a walk down the hill.

Family-run park on the banks of the River Ribble two miles north of Settle, close to Stainforth Force. One of Yorkshire's oldest inns, a fifteenth-century house overlooking Bainbridge's broad village green in the middle of Wensleydale. Oak beams, open fires, three bars and eleven en-suite rooms, with pets warmly welcomed across many areas of the hotel. Semerwater and the Roman road over Wether Fell start close by.

Four self-catering conversions and two shepherd's huts at Barns Farm on the edge of Brotton, a couple of miles inland from Saltburn and Cattersty Sands. The operator's own dog page states that multiple well-behaved dogs are taken without extra charge, that every property has a fully enclosed private patio or garden, and that dog towels, bowls, treats and dog tags are provided for the stay. That combination, no charge and no limit on numbers, is unusual anywhere on this coast and makes it the obvious base for two or more dogs. The properties are Farm Retreat, Paddock View, Stable Yard and Barn Side, plus the Deer and Hare shepherd's huts.

An Edwardian house built for Sir Edgar Speyer, now a hotel with lawns running out to the cliff path above Overstrand beach. The hotel says plainly that it is dog friendly and that you can bring your dog away with you, though it does not publish which rooms or what it charges. The cliff walk to Cromer starts at the end of the garden.

A modernised four-berth cottage on Finley Court in Sewerby village, more or less opposite the gates of Sewerby Hall and two minutes from the clifftop path. The owners' own site describes it as pet friendly and says dog bowls are provided for furry friends, and there is a fully enclosed sunny garden to let a dog out into without a lead. The Ship Inn is at the end of the road and takes dogs, and the sand at Sewerby steps sits well north of the Bridlington North Beach exclusion so it is open all year. Danes Dyke woods are a mile east along the cliff. Parking is off-road at the property.

A Georgian country house hotel in its own grounds at Newby Wiske, a couple of miles south of Northallerton and screened from everything by parkland. Thirsk Tourist Information lists it as welcoming dogs. The gardens and the lanes towards the River Wiske give you an easy hour before breakfast.

A working farm on the ridge between Seahouses and Bamburgh with self-catering cottages, lodges, wigwams and a touring caravan field, all of it set up for dogs rather than tolerating them. The farm tracks give you a walk before breakfast without touching a road. The beach at Seahouses is a mile and a half down the lane.

A quiet, old-fashioned small hotel on the edge of the village, handy for both the castle and the golf links. The hotel states that it is dog friendly but does not say which bedrooms take dogs or whether there is a charge, so confirm when you book. Beach access is through the dunes at the end of Links Road.

Country house hotel in gardens above Talland Bay, midway on the coast path between Looe and Polperro. Every room is dog friendly and your dog can join you in the conservatory for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, which almost no hotel of this sort allows. Four-legged guests get a hamper with a feeding mat, bowls, towels and a sleeping mat.

A four-star coaching inn spanning a Tudor rectory and Georgian townhouses on Helmsley's market square, now part of the Inn Collection Group and so dog friendly it has its own hotel Labrador. Up to two dogs stay for fifteen pounds a night in designated pet-friendly rooms, and dogs can join you in set areas of the pub and restaurant. The castle, walled garden and Cleveland Way start are all on foot from the door.

Coaching inn on the cobbles of the Ripley Castle estate, in a village that is dog friendly almost by charter. Select courtyard rooms come with dog beds, bowls, a bone in a basket and treats for twenty pounds per dog per night, and dogs are welcome in the bar and snug; call before booking as dog rooms are limited.

A riverside inn at Santon Bridge, home of the Biggest Liar in the World competition and a sensible base for Wasdale and Eskdale without driving the passes. Every bedroom is dog-friendly, which is unusual enough to be worth saying, and the rooms are well kept with real coffee and cotton linen.

Welcoming country inn overlooking the cricket green in Thornton Watlass, a few miles south-west of Bedale at the entrance to Wensleydale. The owners welcome families and dogs alike, with dogs made comfortable in the bar and dog-friendly rooms available for a small charge per stay. Local ales and pub classics complete the picture.

Elegant Georgian country hotel overlooking Reeth's village green, with Swaledale's finest walking on the doorstep. The hotel is dog friendly and accepts up to three dogs, with a garden for stretching legs; guest reviews consistently praise the welcome given to four-legged visitors. Its 1783 restaurant and bar serves dinner nightly.

A cliffside inn-with-spa dropped onto Babbacombe Beach, and one of the few smart hotels in Devon where the dog is not quietly shut out of dinner. Many of the rooms, suites, cottages, beach huts and beach suites take dogs, and they are permitted in the main restaurant and lounge, with beds, bowls and treats supplied and an A La Bark menu of sausages, chicken dinner and dog ice cream. The coast path starts on the property.

The Chatsworth estate's hotel at Baslow, looking out over the park it borders. Dogs stay for £20 per dog per night, two per room maximum and pre-booked, arriving to treats, a bowl and a towel; a four-poster dog bed can be added for £35 a night. There is space to dine with a dog, and a room-service dog menu for the nights you would rather not.

A family-run Victorian hotel tucked above Braithwaite, with Grisedale Pike and the Coledale round starting from the garden gate. It advertises itself as a dog-friendly hotel and welcomes dogs to stay with their owners.

Set back at Dunstan, half a mile inland from Craster harbour, with a garden, a car park you can actually use and a family-and-dog welcome stated on the door. A useful base if the harbour village itself is full. The inn describes dog-friendly policies for all guests but its rooms pages do not spell out the bedroom rules.

A detached nineteenth century stone cottage at The Cross in the middle of Silkstone village, sleeping five over three bedrooms, with exposed beams, wooden floors and a wood burner. The important part for a dog is the secure walled garden, which is a rare thing in a village let, and the owners keep a dog toy box in the house. The Silkstone Waggonway path and Pot House Hamlet are within walking distance, with the Trans Pennine Trail at Silkstone Common a mile and a half south. The owners' own website says the cottage takes up to four dogs; no dog charge is published.

Hall and Woodhouse's Georgian hotel by the Stour bridge in Blandford, with a garden running down to the river. Dog-friendly rooms mean there is no need to leave a dog at home, and the team will bring a bowl of water or a treat. Ring ahead if you are bringing a dog so a suitable room is allocated.

Georgian landmark hotel a minute's walk from Valley Gardens, trading since the days of the spa. Its dog-friendly package includes a bag of treats and a toy for the dog plus a 1pm late checkout for a last garden walk; dogs are welcome in the lobby and bar, with dog rooms at fifteen pounds per night.
