Our drawing of the route — the shape of the walk, not a navigation aid. Carry OS Explorer on the hill.
The Yorkshire Water reservoir immediately west of Stocksbridge, below Midhopestones and the A616, with a perimeter walk of about two and a half miles on a mixture of track and field path. Yorkshire Water planted a nine-hectare woodland of more than eighteen thousand trees on the northern bank, so the tree cover here is young and thickening year on year. The sailing club uses the water and the far end runs into farmland. Unlike Langsett, Scout Dike and Winscar, Yorkshire Water publishes no visitor page for Underbank, so there is no car park, no toilet and no marked trail: treat it as a local walk rather than a day out.
