Dog-friendly Nenthead

A village cafe at 1,500 feet in one of the highest settlements in England, on Isaac's Tea Trail and welcome after a wet mile of it. Dog friendly, with dog beds and treats supplied. Opening is limited out of season, so check before you commit to the climb.

Four and a half miles and 200 metres of climbing in a little over two hours around one of the great lead-mining landscapes of the Pennines, past Perry’s Dam and over the edge of Flinty Fell. Start at the Nenthead Mines heritage site car park just below the village, which is free and rarely more than half full, at 440 metres one of the highest trailheads in England. Mine tracks give easy off-lead walking with burns and reservoirs to drink from, but this is a scheduled monument riddled with old shafts and open levels that a dog should not be allowed to explore, and the fell above is grazed with ground-nesting birds from March to July.

An old lead mine yard on the Nenthead road, now a bunkhouse and campsite used mostly by C2C cyclists and walkers. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the campsite at no extra charge, provided they are on a lead at all times. The bunkhouse pages do not state a dog policy, so ask if you want a bed rather than a pitch.
